PSN ID = eprox1

Just picked my beta code up. I am a huge Metal Gear fan, but never got to play MGS3: Subsistenancetesis, so the 'newer' 3rd person style might be a bit different for me.

Quick question - I remember hearing Kojima saying in that 15 minute gameplay premiere video that you can go through the entire game in any of the different view options (1st person, over the shoulder, top view, etc.), but wouldn't you be incredibly limited to some of the moves in, say, 1st person view? I ask because my roommate really enjoys CoD4, and I don't think he would like this game unless he could be just as maneuverable as the other players, who may be using the classic view...

Sorry for posting this in two threads, but it's necessary -

MGO BETA SIGNUPS ARE OPEN.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Thinking of changing that, since it's a pretty lame screen name.
I didn't know that changing your username was even a possibility...can it be done without losing your associated downloaded content (ex. Warhawk)...?

Understatement of the year. I get about half way through the registration process, and then it will state 'The page has been deleted.' and make me start the process all over again. Very annoying.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

What a fucking joke. I STILL CAN'T EVEN GET ON THE GODDAMN WEBSITE.

After all of this bullshit, it's seriously scary to think how their servers are going to handle the actual fucking game.

I share everyone's fears, if this is any indication of things to come, then I'm expecting a huge server crash the first of day service. Either that or one hell of a laggy play experience. Heh, though I really hope this won't be the case.
I'm curious as to how the MGS3 online handled, personally. Were there ever any server issues, or shitty service in general? I mean, the people at Konami DO expect more than 10 times as many people to be playing online as opposed to their MGS3 reprint, right?

I just hope to god these stay online for more than 9 months...

EDIT:
And what the hell - doesn't Sony enforce standards for games that want to utilize their Playstation Network? You would think that using PSN ID's would be their #1 requirement. After seeing how they ask for your 360 GamerTag when signing up for the beta, I seriously am starting to think that Konami is going to want the online to go cross platform or some shit if MGS4: Substenacious eventually moves over to the 360, and this is probably the only way they could do it. Kind of like Square with their PlayOnline service (although I know that an MMORPG is an entirely different story. You know what I mean).

How ya doing, buddy?

The Konami site is now MUCH more reliable (well, right now anyways). I finally completed the registration process, surprisingly with no delays between pages whatsoever. Everything was instant.

I just used my old username for the Game ID, since 'eprox1' isn't long enough.

Game ID - bluebomber

Can't wait for Monday, even though I doubt I will be able to play until late Tuesday :/.

I really don't understand how Konami can say that they were not anticipating the amount of users or level of traffic when, you know, they knew exactly how many codes they gave out. Did they think 3/4's of the people wouldn't bother with the beta or some shit?

Still, it works out because I wouldn't have gotten to participate in the beta AT ALL this week. More playtime for me, I guess.

Dang. I was hoping to hear some more positive impressions of the game, but it sounds like controls are holding everybody back from enjoying it.

I'll be on at about 2 in the morning tonight when I get back from the bars tonight to finally try the game out, otherwise maybe I'll see some of you guys online tomorrow.

Thank god there's an option to reactivate your Konami ID from their site. And yeah, I was just a drunk fucking moron and was entering in the wrong password everytime for like an hour. I wasn't using the numerical password. I'm an idiot.

My character ID is eprox1.

...

ANYWAYS.

So I finally got the chance to play the beta. I have very mixed feelings about it, but I think I liked it overall. I enjoyed aspects of the game, but there were some things that made me wonder what the hell Konami was smoking. Some things that pissed me off that I hope to god they fix -

1) Running. Can you even call it this? It seriously looks like speed walking. I think if people could move with a little more agility, the gameplay would speed up a little and the overall intensity would improve 10 fold. I swear I was 'running' for a good 3 seconds to move about what seemed like 10 feet. I'm trying to run away from three guys who are pelting me from the back, and it just looks like I'm casually trying to escape them. Looks damn weird. Which leads into my next complaint -

2) Health. Who the fuck am I, Superman? Like most people do when they encounter their first opponent in a game, they run straight into eachother, stand completely still and unload their M4 from a 5 foot distance. What normally doesn't occur is the whole process lasting for about 5 seconds before somebody actually dies.

That was literally my first encounter with somebody, and I just stood their with a blank stare on my face, asking myself if that really just happened or not. I'm sorry, but an assault rifle at pointblank would mow anybody down in no time flat. They seriously need to lower the health bars on these guys. I don't care if their pumped full of nano machines. Which also leads me into my third complaint!

3) Sound effects. Player voice sound effects, more specifically. When me and this other guy were tearing into eachother, our characters made some of the most awkward sounding grunts I have ever heard. This is almost the only thing that can be heard when running around in an intense firefight. "Ungh. Ungh. Ungh. Ungh. Ungh. AARRGHHH." They need to seriously trash the damage sound effects, or at least heavily revamp them so I won't basically cringe when I hear it and almost feel a little embarrassed when one of my roommates is watching me play.

Other than those gripes, I think I wasn't enjoying it as much because I just straight up suck at the game right now. I will run up to a guy and start slamming R1 screaming "WHY THE FUCK WON'T I CQC HIS ASS?", only to realize that I had an assault rifle equipped instead of a pistol/knife. I would love to play with some of you guys and get better, because I know the better you are at a game the more fun it can be. I know I'll like it more as I continue to play it, but I also think those changes will speed up the enjoyment process as well.

I'm curious to what improvements you guys think the game needs. What are your gripes with the game? Anything they should patch/fix/add/remove/whatever for the final release?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

So I've been playing this game more and more, and find myself getting better and better, thus making it more and more enjoyable.

The game really is different than what I initially expected it to be – a fast(er) paced 3rd person shooter with stealth elements thrown into the gameplay. Ho-damn was I wrong. I didn’t like the game at all at first, but I kept hearing that you have to “give the game a chance and it will eventually grow on you.” This game is all about tactics – something I’m starting to really appreciate. Too bad 4/5’s of the people on the Beta still treat it as if they were playing CoD4. If you run into the open guns a blazin’, you’re gonna get put down.

I went on a streak yesterday where I dominated every single TDM, so much that I would consistently attain enough Drebin points to max out my M4 with all the attachments (there is no stopping me when I have my grenade launcher). It got to the point where I was carrying the team so much, that eventually my team would follow close behind me everywhere I went to see how I was doing it. We eventually got to the point where we always moved as a squad, and what do you know? We dominated 10 times harder. When we stuck together and helped each other out, we rarely died. Fucking cool.

Still – I find that this rarely happens. And it sucks, because the game is an absolute fucking blast when it does. I think I am one of the few people in the beta who uses the SOP system. Oh well, maybe people will get better as they play more. I know I still have a ways to go before I can call myself ‘really good.’

The game isn’t without its flaws, though. Don’t get me wrong on that. There are about 50 different tweaks Konami could make to make this one of the best online experiences out there. I’m very curious as to what the finalized game will be like...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

haHA!!! When you get the game, there's a new update available. IT FIXES THE GODDAMN SPEED!!! I am actually RUNNING now.

Anyways, player speed has significantly been increased, thank god. I thought this was one of the biggest problems with the beta - I am absolutely thrilled that it has been fixed. Thank you, Konami.

I know that mostly everybody is concerned with finishing the single player campaign before they even think about jumping onto the whole multiplayer scene, but I was just wondering how everybody plans on customizing their online characters 4 skill slots.

I haven't played enough to level up any of the skills I currently have equipped, but I know that once I DO level some up, I'm going to have some tough decisions to make.

I'm really torn on what I want right now - I can't decide if I want to be a broad based soldier with four many level 1 skills, or if I want to be a little more generalized with two level 2 skills, or if I want to be completely specialized with one level 3 skill with a level 1 skill (lvl. 3 Knifing + lvl. 1 CQC )

I want to slit people throats (SO. BAD.), but I don’t think I could ever sacrifice my precious movement speed and assault rifle skills just for a single move. Same goes with CQC – I would LOVE to disarm people and leave them dumfounded on what just happened to them, but you’re wasting three skill slots just to disarm a person.

I really think I might just end up using a level 2 skill (assault rifle mastery) with two level 1 skills, such as movement and possibly CQC. I think that’s decently well rounded, and can stand up against most situations in a fight. Really though, I guess I will just have to play around with the skills and see which ones I like and don’t like :/…

What are your guys plans?

I was speaking idiomatically.

I'm at level 4...but I have no idea what my play time is :/...

I'll be home later tonight after work to see if I can crack out a clan (unless someone else does before I can get to it).

Currently using Rifle lvl2, CQC lvl1, and QB lvl3. I think I'm going to switch out CQC for Monomania, though. I'll probably learn to alternate certain support skills between free-for-all and team based games.

So I'm level 4, but I'm only at 9 hours of gameplay. Nowhere near 20 hours, and won't be anytime soon it looks like :/. Anyone get a chance to create a clan yet?

I'm not online as much as I'd like to be, but when I am, I would also like to play with people other than strangers the majority of the time.

People still playing this? I'm on pretty often, but I get my ass handed to me everytime.

It's getting really annoying how the only chance you have at killing someone is with a headshot. I unleash a full M4 clip on some guy from behind, he turns around and caps me in the head with a pistol as I'm still shooting him. It just seems so broken sometimes.

It's also too bad that there's only, like, 4 people in the clan. I have yet to even play with one of you guys.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
