Rumble in SIXAXIS confirmed
Quote:
Big shocker at today's Electronic Arts pre Tokyo Game Show press event. While playing a demo of Burnout Paradise, we felt something that we never thought we'd feel from a PS3 controller -- shake!

That's right, Burnout Paradise is the first rumble-equipped PS3 game we've ever played. Which made us think at the time, if the game is making the controller shake, the controller must be a new version of the Sixaxis!

In fact, the controller we were using to play the demo looked exactly like a standard Sixaxis, except that it had a sticker on the bottom that said "RUMBLE." It also felt notably heavier than the standard Sixaxis.
ARGH. Now I have to wait a couple of months before I buy some additional controllers! Oh well, we all saw it commin'. All I'm really curious about is if they did anything with the "new rumble technology."

Is this going to be called the Dual Shock 3 or the SIXAXIS 2?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

So the Ratchet & Clank demo is fucking tits. Too bad it's only like 5 minutes long :/.

The Groovitron and the free-fall/dodge-traffic part made up for the length, though.

p.s. did i just say fucking tits

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Ya know what, I think I was just having more fun than usual with the demo that it just seemed to be shorter than it really was. That or the booze.

I played through it again this morning and it seemed perfectly lengthy for a demo. I REALLY want to buy the game, but I also REALLY want to actually play through the other ones first...I'm all about platformers, but I have yet to play a single Ratchet & Clank game . Fucked up, I know.

Hey, so rumors are going around about a new PS3 firmware 2.0 update that's supposedly going to be released soon.

It all started with the latest PSP 2.72 firmware update:
Quote:
Network

* Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles have been expanded.
* Support has been added for [Remote Start]* of the PS3 system under [Remote Play].

*To use this feature, the PS3 system software must be version 2.00 or later. For detailed information about [Remote Start], visit the PS3 Help & Support section at eu.playstation.com and select Connecting to other devices in the General Guides area.
If this is anything what it sounds like, this will make the remote play feature about 147 times cooler than it already is. Kind of a pain to go away for a long time and leave your PS3 on at home in "remote play" mode, so if this will allow the PSP to remotely switch the PS3 on and off, that would be pretty convenient indeed.

I'm a little skeptical about this because I know that if the PS3 is in sleep mode, then there is no network connection. But could a firmware update change this behavior?

ANYWAYS.

It looks like the 2.0 update may be coming very soon. In the comments of this ThreeSpeech blog post, it shows this -
Quote:
9. Hmm.. I wonder when the 2.0 firmware update will show up. Hopefully this month! Strangely enough, it’s what I want the most.

Comment by amras_telemnar — Nov 1, 2007 @ 2:42 pm
Quote:
11. @9 - News on that is coming tomorrow but it will be within the next two weeks!!

Comment by Three Speech — Nov 1, 2007 @ 2:47 pm
Yeah, it's all speculation at this point, but a lot of people are talking customizable XMB themes (like the PSP), as well as in game access to the XMB, which would totally rock. Hopefully we'll get some more information or at least some confirmation about this big update soon...

EDIT:
AND WHERE THE HELL IS MY HOT SHOTS GOLF 5? I have been anticipating that game for the longest time...

I was speaking idiomatically.

PS3 2.00 Firmware Tomorrow
Quote:
Building on the success and potential of the Remote Play functionality, Version 2.00 will cement the partnership between PS3 and PSP and create a truly global experience. With the ability to turn your PS3 on and off from Wi-fi connection, there is now the opportunity to listen to the music, look at the photos and watch the videos saved on the PS3 Hard Disk Drive, anywhere in the world.

To further enhance the PS3 offering, Version 2.00 allows for the creation of personalised playlists in both the music and photo sections. This simple to use function gives users an opportunity to create unlimited music playlists for all occasions, as well as sharing favourite photos in glorious high definition.

Continuing with the idea of a personalised PS3, Version 2.00 allows for customisation of the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) menu screen. Change the colour and brightness with the greatest of ease or have something completely different by setting a custom theme. With the potential for new backgrounds to become available on PLAYSTATION®Network in the future, Version 2.00 truly opens up a whole raft of options.

A host of other enhancements includes the addition of an Information Board on XMB to keep people up to date on the latest PlayStation® news, the inclusion of a new PLAYSTATION Network category and logo for easier navigation and Trend Micro Web Security, a free2, state of the art internet security system, designed to give parents peace of mind.
PSP/PS3 remote play functionality has been pretty much fully optimized, but there is still no in game XMB . Customize themes I guess is pretty cool...but I can think of QUITE a few things I would have much rather seen.

What the hell is this picture? Is this the 'information board'? Is it basically like an RSS feed for Sony news or something?

Oh yeah. Uncharted demo tomorrow. Everybody check it out and then buy that game.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Why is the remote play of no use? If you have the latest M-33 custom firmware with the 1.5 kernel, then it's the location free player that was removed - not the remote play feature.

And yeah, I can't fucking wait for that Uncharted demo. I have been anticipating that game for quite some time now.

EDIT:
Yeah, I can't see that Info Board being too...interesting, I guess. I'll just have to wait and see what it really does.

How ya doing, buddy?

This could be cool. PS3 Theme Creator.

Granted, I have no artistic ability whatsoever, but hopefully other people will create some pretty unique and beautiful themes for all of us to use. Maybe they will start popping up on deviant art, or something.

Ah, I didn't realize that the auto on feature required 3.75 firmware on the PSP . In that case, I'm out of luck as well until they release M-33 3.75+...

PS3 Getting DivX Support
Quote:
"DivX, Inc. today announced that DivX(R) video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified(R) products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.

We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

I had always hoped that either the PS3 or the 360 would get DivX support one day, making my life a lot easier.
Well, it looks like the 360 is getting DivX support as well.

(I know, that should have probably gone in the 360 thread, but it was sort of a comment about your comment, and I don't have a 360 so I feel weird going in those threads ...)

There are talks of the PS3 being able to read shared files/folders on a network without using a special protocol in the next update as well.
Wait a sec. By special protocol, do you mean a media server, such as WMP11? That would be...so cool if they could do that.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Yeah that's what I meant.

Let me just clarify - with this rumored update, setting up WMP11 as a media server for the PS3 can be considered redundant and unnecessary because the PS3 will now have the ability to read shared network folders & files, providing direct access to the content?

(I hope I worded that better :/)

Wow. I haven't posted here in quite a while.

Anyways - Tomorrow we get firmware 2.10...

...AND THAT MEANS DIVX.

Quote:
Version 2.10 is mostly a visual media-based update, with none of the listed features having any impact on gameplay. In other words, you can stop holding your breath - there's no in-game XMB here. Instead, we the arrival of two highly anticipated features. Blu-Ray profile 1.1 and DivX support will heavily increase the PS3's standing as a media hub.

There's a smattering of other little additions, all of which we've listed after the break. There are also a couple of stipulations with regards to DivX - namely, that copyright protected files, v3.11 encoded videos and files larger than 2GB cannot be played.

[Via NeoGAF]

PS3 Firmware v2.10 features:

* Voice changer

The Voice Changer feature has been added to voice / video chat.

Using this feature, you can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.

* You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3TM system to enhance audio playback.
* DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played.
* Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported. **
wtf is blu-ray 1.1...

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Assuming that HD-DVD really does tank, I'll be very sad to see it go. The technology was definitely solid, and it would have been interesting to see what it might have evolved into.

Other than seeing shelves of blue cases, I don't really have a problem with Blu-ray taking over DVD's spot, but it really does need a lot of work when it comes with elaborate menu trees and interactivity. I couldn't imagine something like Bourne Supremacy on Blu-ray right now, although I'm sure that the new profile makes it all possible.

The HD-DVD group did make a lot of stupid mistakes though, like pushing combo discs, rarely initiating any kind of sales, thin advertising, etc. I'm just interested to see what Paramount does now, since a lot of money was involved when they agreed to be HD-DVD exclusive.
While I have no idea which HD format is superior, I am kind of glad that this war will soon be over. I can't imagine how multiple formats benefit consumers.

Anyways, I also read that Paramounts HD-DVD exclusive contract ends in 2009, so I wonder what will happen then.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I'm really diggin' the whole 'pre-game war room' idea for Warhawk. It sounds exactly like what Insomniac plans on doing with Resistance 2, having a mini lobby with your teammates before each match. The whole warboard with little soldier/vehicle avatars that you can place on the map sounds pretty fun, although it's likely that most people won't take it very seriously.

Communication and strategizing makes those types of games about 10 times more fun than they already are.

Cool. I like how it starts picking up random people in the background who are just walking by.

If they could put this as in as an optional alternative for the cover system in Killzone 2, that would be pretty cool (for about 3 games, but whatever).

I totally dig Warhawk, but I can see how it's not for everybody. I would also agree that CoD4 is probably the higher quality (and more popular) multiplayer game and probably the best bet for you, even though I personally have more fun with Warhawk. Honestly, I would just get both if you have the cash, since they are both awesome.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else picked up Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. I finally got around to playing it this weekend, and it was awesome as expected. If anyone else has it, I'd be glad to try out the online mode sometime.
I'm definetly picking this game up, no questioin. I just don't know if I should wait until i can grab it for $30 off of ebay (like I'm doing with DMC4).

I played the shit out of the PSP game, so I can only imagine how addicting a PS3 version with online play would be...

I am very disappointed with Hot Shots online multiplayer. No voice chat, and you can’t even see the other player when you play with them – it’s basically 60 second speed golf where everybody just gets up and swings at the exact same time, and you pray you win at the end.

I mean, I can understand this methodology with the mass 50 player tournaments, but I certainly would expect the same experience as the (awesome) offline multiplayer when I’m playing a private match with two other people. I want to see them make that chip in eagle, not fucking read about it when everybody is finished with the hole. And for fucks sake, why in the hell do they use the old keyboard for entering in text between holes, and not the new QWERTY keyboard. Incredibly lame – here’s hoping for a multiplayer patch that will address these issues...

Even though the online mode was a letdown, the single player is nothing but awesome and addicting as ever.

Additional Spam:
Good news for home theater audiophiles (I assume Megalith with his sig), as the PS3 will be getting support for DTS-HD audio output with the 2.30 firmware update, along with support for the new revamped store. The store is supposed to go live ~April 15th, so I can only assume that is when the firmware will be available?

I don't have the equipment to support DTS-HD, but do all Blu-Ray discs support this format - including games? Or is this limited to select Blu-Ray movies?
