For long time waiting, Two events come to minds. First off was the PS2. I remember when I knew about the release date and I couldn't wait. I wanted to get a new system and in fact I almost got a Dreamcast instead. The second one was when I was waiting for College to start. I was waiting ever since the begining of the spring semester of my high school.

For short time waiting, I would have to say that the longest is a roller coaster ride at Carowinds in NC here. But the thing is that once I was at the coaster, I wasn't able to ride it because it was a little too small. Made me so upset that I just left the park.
