Really, I can't say I've ever heard people use the word "series" besides generally in a collection of at least two related objects. Where the related objects in this case would be the original, the sequel, its sequel, and so forth. We might refer to future objects as series, such as "first in an upcoming series" as Solis noted, but other than that I can't recall anyone using series for a singular thing. If they are called "series", the writers are more than likely using the word incorrectly.
