You can kill em, just takes a lot of ammo to do so (which you probably won't have a lot of at that point in the game if it's your first playthrough).

Okay, I've looked at the leaderboards for Chapter 1 on the PS3 version... How the fuck are people getting times of ~11 min. for all of Chapter 1? The best I can do on 1-1 alone is ~12 min. Is there some way to make the helicopter arrive faster or something?

Yeah, boss fights (and those damn Reapers) are a cakewalk. I'm playing Professional Mode right now, but those damn 1-hit kills just annoy me.
