It says in the article the photographer was running towards the train firing off his flash to warn the driver, the photo was just a by-product of this.

This to me sounds like a rationalization after the fact. If he'd really been doing that, the pictures would have been of the ceiling.
"Oh, of course I was trying to save him and not taking pictures of his final moments like some sort of ghoulish vulture. I was trying to save him the only way I knew how: by taking pictures."
