Back when my brother bought his PS2, we decided to go in 50/50 on a memory card (largely because he was short of cash at the time). I kicked in half the cost and got half the space. Which was fine until he went and lost the card. He lost a few Mortal Kombat and Sould Calibur unlockables; I lost all my FF X-2 saves (98% completion), all my Xenosaga saves (last save point in final dungeon), and more.
Needless to say, I went out and bought my own card the next day and pledged never to be so stupid again. But I haven't touched X-2 or Xenosaga since then; thinking of the sheer effort it would take to claw my way back to where I was just makes me sick.
I also once had the oppurtunity, back in '99 or so, to pick up a copy of Breath of Fire 2 at a hefty discount. That store was great (we scored copies of Chrono Trigger, SoE, BoF1, Earthbound, and Paladin's Quest for a song). I assured myself that I'd pick up the cart eventually, but the place eventually went belly-up.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
