To quote a good friend of mine's "review" on it from way back in July:

Quote:
It's a wonderful world!

"Subarashiki Kono Sekai"

If theres one thing I think gaming should change direction to, it's going with this modern jpop culture take. Persona 3 and Subarashiki are very fine examples of how well it turns out. So what this "wonderful world"? It's a SquareEnix title from the group that did "Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories". (Jupiter) Tetsuya Nomura's absolutely original and hip, japanese pop cultured inspired game for the Nintendo DS. You play as Neku, your average kid that's into music and graffiti. One day he's told that he only has 7 days to live and if he wants to survive, he'll need to play "Death's Game". Death's game is a bunch of orders he'll need to fulfill while prowling the streets of Shibuya along with his sidekick, Shiki, who was also dragged into this "Game". You'll be facing these weird entitles called Noise in a dual screen battle system. On top, you'll control Shiki with the dpad, while at the bottom you'll use use the stylus for Neku. Neku can cast magic or melee away with stylus gestures. Shiki attacks with her plush cat, Pochi. If you can time each others attack in a good rhythm, you'll gain even more attack bonuses. Also, things might get too hectic in such a case, so you can have Shiki on auto battle, but you won't rank as well at the end . Outside of battle, you'll need to listen to peoples thoughts in order to figure out what's going on. Like why is Hachiko all dirty?! It's really a big departure from your typical RPG. As I said earlier, the fashion trend of the game is a huge key element, so you'll find yourself shopping at shops like a gothic lolita store for your latest equipment. Your style influences how battles will turn out. The culture trend doesn't just end there, the music itself is a mixture of trance and hip hop, a very modern score you won't find in many other games. Trendy dressed kids, cellphones, fast food and the streets of Shibuya. Folks may hate Nomura for what hes done with the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series, but if there was game that was really meant to be made by him, this is it. It's definitely one hell of a unique experience. Here's hoping when this hits stateside that it still retains most of its personality that makes it stand out so. On a final note, Famitsu gave it a 36/40

For some reason I see a lot of the content losing meaning when translated into America so we'll have to see how it turns out.

I enjoyed what little I played of it, so unless they find a way to completely screw over the English release I don't see why I won't enjoy the stateside release all the same.

Now I want to play it again =(

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Yeah, the game takes place in THE BRONX.

Word.

I'm sure the game itself will still be enjoyable. Just... the whole point of it was the Shibuya style and all these funny puns.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

The difficulty was bumped down a bit (not too much though) for the US version, but I don't really mind I guess, since they nixed the idea to make it take place in America.

Shiki is voiced by Colette from Tales of Symphonia. Not sure how I feel about that. Neku is voiced by some fellow who has only done some minor roles in kid shows.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Right.

Before there were talks of making the game take place in America to appeal to the audience.

Glad they didn't go with that though, it wouldn't really fit with the theme, although if they went with their original choice of American locale it could be justified.

For me it was the music that kept me interested in the game, since the top screen combat was rather tedious (until I figured out that putting Combo Panel -1 is a good thing for Joshua) and my touchscreen is a bit weird, so attacking with Neku was rough for some Pins.

Post-Game is just severely screwing me. I suppose I should eat a ton of food to pump stats.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Only around 7 of the 43 tracks (US ver) in the game are actually worth listening to anyway. Although I'm more attracted to the beats in the music than the weird j-pop (or in the rare case the 2 songs come up, rap) lyrics that they have.

Just finished recalibrating my touchscreen, so I have more control over Neku now.

My wallet is going to be shot to hell buying the food to increase stats.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

-> Battle PP -> Shut Down PP -> Battle PP -> Shut Down PP

I think I got that evolution chain right...

Go to Cadoi City [Darling Designs - Natural Puppy] and drop 3500 yen on a Happy Beam to start it off.

Evolution with SDPP and MPP is different, as they count 9x as much as BPP on the pp bar. A little goes a long way sort of thing.

(as in 200 SDPP vs 900 BPP, SDPP becomes dominant and if it could evolve via SDPP it does)

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

1) Nintendo Channel -> DS Download Service, fire up Mingle Mode in TWEWY. Should count as a Civvie for 20 MPP each time you turn on and off Mingle Mode. Requires a Nintendo Wii with the Nintendo Channel (Europe is out of luck until the end of the month?)

2) Turn on Mingle Mode, plug in the DS and leave it on overnight. Should wake up to find an alien or two. Takes a while since Aliens are random, but count as 100 MPP.

ESP'ers = People with this game who are actively in Mingle Mode. Worth 50 MPP (450 PP in terms of Evolution).
Civvies = People with a DS doing something wireless (Pictochat, trading pokemon, etc). Worth 20 MPP (180 PP in terms of Evolution).
Aliens = Randomly given to you by the game. Worth 100 MPP (900 PP in terms of Evolution).

Nintendo Channel was released 05.07.08 in USA and costs 0 Wii Points and takes up 123 Blocks.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Mastered Pins do not evolve.

Mastered means either it had no evolution or you picked the wrong type of PP to level it with.

Incase for some reason, someone wants something to do with the stuff:

US/EU Voices & Sounds

JP Voices & Sounds

The voices (if you can call some of them voices) are in the stream folder, wavesample has the sounds.

Also a game-rip of the 8 tracks created exclusively for the US version. I think the EU version doesn't have the "gang mix" of Twister, and one song is actually on the JP ost just under a different name (the bonus track) but anyway...

Forgotten Tracks

The one you get on iTunes has the US version of Twister on it + JP ost.
I think S-E offers a hard copy you can buy, but they mentioned it was simply the JP ost.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
