.mp4 and .avi are merely containers formats, containing the video track, audio track, and subtitles; therefore changing the container format will not allow you to playback the video. You need to determine what format the video is encoded in, and you can do so using GSpot. Once you know the format the video is encoded in, you can get the correct codecs.

I would recommend CCCP, a filter pack that will probably play back everything you ever encounter. It comes with Media Player Classic and ZoomPlayer, which are both vastly superior to WMP, DivX or WinAmp. Before installing CCCP, make sure you have deleted all other codecs and filters as they can cause conflicts.

Well, CCCP is a minimal filter pack that is fine tuned with the two bundled players; so its components are all configured to harmoniously work with each other. It is very different from abominations such as Nino's pack or the K-Lite Codec Pack. If you'd rather not install a filter pack, you can always download and install components separately:

ffdshow to play back almost everything, Haali's Splitter to play back mkv, avi, mp4 and ogm containers, and VSFilter to display subtitles.

To play back the media on a stand alone DVD player, you will need to convert the file to MPEG-2 then author it onto a DVD. Look on sites such as VideoHelp and Doom9 for tutorials on your video format. (Could you tell us what it us?) Bear in mind the conversion will drastically reduce quality; since your source is already compressed, transcoding will probably result in nasty artifacts.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
