Is this game ANYTHING like pso where you could use your own character for story mode and online play? Or does story mode follow a linear path with set characters?

I guess I have to get a guardian's account right away to make use of a custom character. =/ I was hoping to level while playing story mode. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
