That one is easy for me. Hero. Riding on the coattails of the wildly successful and far superior Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero somehow managed to astonish me even though it was completely formulaic, anti-climactic and with more CGI than any "martial arts" flick should ever be allowed to use. But I'll be goddamned if it wasn't one of the most beautifully shot and most wonderfully color-complimented movies I've ever seen in my life.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is also another one that I enjoyed but you can tack on cliché character development and a horribly played-out story to the list of flaws. However, I have yet to see such an assault on the visual sense as that movie was. Throughly mind-blowing visuals and spectacularly outlandish (albeit completely impossible) sword fights make this one of the best-looking films I've ever seen. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
