I know exactly what you mean. I had to walk a fine line between being disappointed about the tracklist and giving each track a fair shot. Really, even if they're not the best games, they can still very well be great pieces of music, which was the case with several tracks from games I've never played (RoboBlitz, Tokyo Drift, etc.). Overall, the album is about half good, which is really all you can hope for from a standard album. It's definitely not the best of the best, but it's not the worst, either. I hope they clean some things up with Volume 2 and invite some real "celebrity composers" from Japan to contribute.
Oh, and to add, yes, making a "tribute to game music" shouldn't consist of arranging your own work, either!
