The standard 80GB model definetly has backwards compatibility, but the 40GB Limited Edition model will not have hardware backwards compatibility. Ryan Payton alluded to the possibility that Sony isn't working on software emulation, but not completely ruling it out.

Called support today about the bundle.
The man in India claimed that it would be up and ready to Pre-Order late this afternoon. "6PM?" "Late this afternoon." I was speaking idiomatically.

Update on my end:
Still getting raped by the lack of bandwith on Konami's site. It doesn't seem to be out of stock yet, but now I'm getting no where. Before I could get to the checkout, but now I can't get passed a 503 error. I'm thinkin' Konami just killed the site down for a few, and will open it up later. What a clusterfuck. FELIPE NO

So.
Funny story, Konami decided to be ridiculous, and Shipping Insurance is, you sitting down? $500. I went and hit "back" (after thousands of refresh hits), and changed to an upgraded shipping method, and miraculously, the huge charge went away. Suffice to say, the entire sitution reeked of Amazon's $150 XBOX360 fiasco, traffic slowing to a crawl, many people pissed. Regardless, I have succeeded. I have it pre-ordered. I feel like a complete nerd now.  Most amazing jew boots
