You should defrag your volumes regularly, really; it can speed things up considerably and extend the live of a drive.
(Windows only requires 15% free space on a volume to be free in order to defragment.)
In other words, you should burn things to CD/DVD and delete them in order to run a defragmentation.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
