It's not really that Norton itself is downright horrible, it's that there are better things available. (That and every version of Norton since... two years ago brings my computer to a crawl at boot; this isn't a memory issue, either: it's the service's start that takes forever--it has plenty of room in RAM for itself.)

You do know that there are plenty of good (and free) alternatives to deal with spam, right?
Also, NIS2006 couldn't be the best program ever, because that would mean that it would work for everone (including me).
