I can say from experience that this isn't necessarily true: my Aunt's dog regularly ate chocolate before it died. (The dog died of old age, I promise.)
It once consumed two entire boxes of Russel Stover's chocolates and was fine. (The veterinarian was panicking, of course.)
It is true that dogs can't effectively break down the theobromine in chocolate, though. In theory, they should die from eating a somewhat significant amount.
Now, as for my favorite chocolate...
Since I don't consider any chocolate with filling (Cadbury eggs, for example) truly chocolate, I'd have to go with either Dove chocolate for "milk chocolate," and Hershey for "dark chocolate."
Jam it back in, in the dark.
