I know this may sound trivial, but I have on many occasions knocked my soundcard slightly out of place resulting in no sound/mic (only because I have more then a few mics I use that I'm often taking in and out, with disregard for how I take them out). So that may be a possibility, other then that I'm confused as to what it can be, I'd say drivers but when my drivers had messed up before I wasn't able to open up Sound Control...
