ERRYDAY MINECRAFT
 aka GET OUT OF MY DIG YOU DARN ANIMALS - the game
I figure it's high time I make a thread. Minecraft is a sandbox game by a swedish guy by the name of Markus Persson, aka Notch. It mixes building, exploration, resource gathering and survival in a randomly generated world where anything can be dug, destroyed and rebuilt. Collect wood, build a house, craft tools, mine rock and ore, craft better tools, defend your house from nightly mobs, build a giant castle out of glass. And sheep. The game is currently work in progress, and if you buy it now, you can play the in-development alpha that's updated about weekly with new features. There's a few different gamemodes. Creative mode gives you unlimited blocks with no health bar or mobs and is basically just a level editor where people can create all the 2D sprites they desire.   This mode is available to play for free as it hasn't been update for a long time and Notch didn't feel like removing it since it was so popular. You can play it online as well. Indev is a kind of survival mode where you create a world and need to gather material for crafting items and tools. You have a healthbar, there's a day and night cycle, and enemies that spawn during the night or in dark caves.    Infdev is the same as Indev, but with an infinite map that can go on forever. It also lacks theme options for creating a new world, but it is the most advanced mode with the most features and materials, as Indev has not been updated for a long time. Notch is planning on combining the two, so I assume sooner or later you will have the world generation options from Indev in Infdev. 
Notch is working on Infdev multiplayer, and is planning on a few other gamemodes like Zombie horde where a group defends against waves of enemies, and Dungeons and Levers where you can't build or dig, and the idea if to play through dungeons created by others, complete with traps and monsters etc. People are building some hilarious structures and bases in the game itself, but also making custom textures and player skins as well. OK TIME FOR SCIENCE
The physics on the server work really weird, but I've got bridge building sussed out. Behold:  This is the treshold of a bridge, you can see where the blocks start falling. The structure below the top one makes no difference, I wanted to check if something like that would somehow support it further, but it doesn't. Any blocks added to the side actually shorten how long it can be without support. So if I added one block to the side, the bridge would be one block shorter in length where the blocks start falling.  So you put a support all the way to the ground. Now you can continue it to  this spot, again the blocks start falling.  Add another support, this is how far it goes.  Now, the weird thing about the physics is that even though you need support to build that far, you can remove the support afterward.  Like so.  And now this one. But you need to remove the supports in this order. If you remove this one first, then the one further, the bridge collapses.  Fuck yeah. Now the bridge holds walking and jumping on, but it will act like hovering sand and gravel in Alpha, as in if you attach anything or remove anything near it (without support right under it), it will collapse.  Like this.  I was speaking idiomatically.

So Acer hosted a private server for multiplayer Alpha and it's pretty sweet. Lag was minimal, some disappearing blocks every now and then and you might "blink" back to a previous spot when trying to jump over a higher block, but otherwise ran smoothly when Boo and I were playing.
Multiplayer is missing day/night cycle and both hostile and friendly mobs, so it's pretty quiet without constant baas. Furnace doesn't work, so no smelting, but you get iron with /iron boo taught me.  Still work to do, but this WILL be awesome. Private server with GFF buddies, minan, buildan, exploran will be wonderful. I will gladly stay away from public servers, apparently they are filled with lag and lots of griefing  How ya doing, buddy? |
