But really, it will be nice to finally have it in english, especially since Nintendo seems to have decided to never return to the franchise in english. I really liked the first two and bought Mother 3 even though I can't understand a word. The box is just so cool.

It's not absolutely necessary, but I recommend it. Zero is a good game and it gives better perspective playing them in order. Zero also isn't that long of an RPG (though there is a lot of grindan at some parts).

They're unrelated despite similarities. You could say Earthbound is an alternative retelling of Mother 1 because of similar characters yet taking place in a new world. However, storywise it's certainly a sequel. Either way, it's worth playing them in order. Plus Mother 1 has some completely awesome music.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't GBA stunt the quality of music, at least for 1 + 2?

The GBA version of Mother 1 fixes a few bugs from the original game making it a lot harder if I remember correctly.

I think the main reason they want to translate the cart besides deep-rooted obsession is that the translation for "Earthbound Zero" is from the official translated prototype cart and there was probably a lot of localization/simplication involved.
