With the latest update, if they had used the NES sprites, I don't think they would've blended as well with all the other sprites used in the game. In a way, it would've seemed like they half-assed it along the way using the lesser quality sprites.
I have nothing against the NES sprites, but overall with game design the All-Star sprites just made more sense.

You're making my head hurt with this circle conclusion.
There's a Game Boy Wario sprite and a Mega Man 2 level, not to mention ROUNDED Sonic 3 style Sonic sprites; how does using Mario All-Stars sprites make any more or less "sense" than using NES era Mario sprites (and I'm not just talking for playable characters)? It's not as if there haven't been Mario sprites after Mario All-Stars, much less far prettier and/or detailed ones before or since.
Ok, so the guy really, really likes SMB3, so he themes practically the whole game around it, both structure and interface. I'm saying it was a silly idea to go with the All-Stars version as it is not a very pretty example of 16-bit graphics. This subjective view is not explained away by going "well it's all based on All-Stars, so it makes sense"
There's nowhere I can't reach.
