This is pretty great, I never say no to more Eva. Even if they manage to botch up the new stories or style somehow, you'll always have the original series. Either was it'll be a lot more interesting to see than the US live-action I think they're still working on.

It would be super halious if they made them based on Re-Take 0-4 ='D

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Precisely. But then, I would love to see even something like Girlfriend of Steel 2 or Shinji Raising Project animated for that matter.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Don't misunderstand. There is no "mid-series" in the works, one of the four movies takes place "mid-series" (while one takes place before the series and two after it, etc). The four movies are the only ones coming out.. though who knows, maybe we'll get an animated OVA of GoS2 at some point <3

That said, a while back I was a bit surprised to find out how much Eva was still being made. These movies are merely a return to animated Eva, but NGE has been going on in manga form for a while now.

Not only Sadamoto's NGE manga (which I think is still being released), but also Girlfriend of Steel 2 (now Angelic Days under license), which I loved, and the Shinji Ikusei Keikaku manga (based on the PC/DC game of the same name), which was very fun too.

Too bad translations for it have been very slow (only two chapters). Seeing the NERV crew (including Gendo) power up the HQ during a blackout by pedaling on exercise bicycles was too hilarious to pass up.

(yes these are official Gainax endorsed series, not doujin)

They could have officially endorsed Re-Take if it weren't for the graphic sex scenes, I guess. It has more than enough plot and skillful narration to match the bext of Gainax.

But then, had it been an "official" Gainax release, Re-Take might not have become so legendary among the doujin masses.

The character designs in the Newtype scans there looked a lot closer to traditional style Eva than the Aim for the Top 2 and FLCL look. It's really all up to what team handles the movies.

How ya doing, buddy?

Remember how the cosplay, fan-art, and doujin community exploded when we were first given the redesigns for FFVII? Imagine that times two (or even three) if the same thing was done for Shinji and company. Redesigns are all the rage these days, and I would love an update for the characters, even if it was just to resemble Sadamoto's art style more.
While it's true that a redesign of sort wouldn't hurt since this is closer to a remake than a second season (where they usually keep the old designs), the Eva designs are pretty iconic, so Gainax would be a fool to alter them too drastically. I'm sure the designs in the scan isn't obviously directly lifted from footage, but Newtype pretty much always uses designs from the series, so if you see a certain style in one of their features, the show will usually look like that.

I stumbled upon Re-Take once, thinking it was just a typical hentai doujin. But then I *gasp* actually read some of it, and found out it was a serious doujin. Anyone have any direct links of the chapters?
No, but I can pack and send Re-Take 0-3 for you. 4 has just recently been released and ends the series quite dramatically, but it's far too long to have been translated yet, unfortunately

They also just recently released a soundtrack for Re-Take which I've been listening to lately

It's really quite great, even though it's only 8 songs. Very impressive work and fits the atmosphere well. If you want, I can send it or link you to the torrent.

As far as I understand, the Platinum release was cleaning up and remastering the whole series so it looks a whole lot better and with improved audio. The main draw for many were the "director's cut" episodes, which added a few more scenes into some of the episodes.

If you already have the original collection like me, I don't think it's really that crucial, but for someone getting the series for the first time, it's a good starting point.

I used
http://www.deadfrog.us/index.php?act=entry&id=6909

If you used the same one, the comments say:

"In case you get a "no host URL" type error, manually edit the tracker announce URL to point to http://tracker.deadfrog.us:42426/announce"

(though I didn't get any error on my BitComet)

All I saw were some comparisons screens of a few episodes like years ago.

There were a few extra scenes such as Asuka in a flashback, hanging out with (and making a pass on) Kaji on a boat before she arrived to Japan. I think the most crucial was showing the eye that's in Gendo's palm, and Unit-00 morphing into a giant Rei before exploding when she self-destructed. Since none of them were really explained, they didn't add that much to the actual story, but they were interesting details in the least. Certainly not worth re-buying the series, though.

I tried to find the website with the extra scenes listed, but I think it's been taken down by now.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

The ending had me confused quite a bit at first (especially the two "fake" endings), but then I remembered the whole deal with bandage Asuka and it made more sense.

Spoiler:
One thing I was confused about was the little girl at the end. For some reason I first wondered if it was the young Misato, having just survived Second Impact, but probably not. Either she's just a random survivor that the artist wanted to find the two kids, rather than just show them, or she has some other significance I'm not getting.

It doesn't really make that much sense for her to be there in the first place, if this is the Eva ending universe, though =/

Anyway, I didn't feel it was a copout at all. It's what it all came down to in the end, after all - (bandage) Asuka forgiving Shinji, and the two learning to let each other close again, as shown in the very last panel (and my current sig, usk lace).

I thought it was very sweeping, Shinji wanting his own happiness all his life, and then willing to give it up for Asuka (though that was his happiness in the first place). In effect, Re-Take was in the end about redoing the End of Evangelion for a slightly nicer Shinji + Asuka ending.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I too was very satisfied with the TV ending, and actually preferred it over EoE.

That doesn't mean I mind seeing these alternative universe things like Girlfriend of Steel 2 and Ikari Shinji Raising Project. To say it's what all/most Eva fans wanted is a bit exaggerating, and most of the people who hated both the ending(s) as well as Shinji and thought he was nothing but a spineless piece of turd, weren't really fans of the series in the first place.

It does seem though a lot of people who liked the series (and a lot who didn't) felt confused or disappointed because of a lack of an ending that tells you what to think. Many of the more open endings seem to suffer from this.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Is that from a proper raw or that fansubbed handcam footage?

Q, they are dvd releases.
Very nice. Must try getting that tonight. I saw a bit of one fansub at our anime club, but it was made on a handycam version, which basically made me bobofrown and refuse to watch it.

Not that I would have wanted to watch Eva there anyway.

I just watched it and it was.. well.. interesting. Not as different from the original beginning as I'd have hoped, but even if it had been just the first three episodes with massive production values, that would have been entertaining enough.

That's basically what this was for now, with a number of little changes. We'll only know from the following movies just how much there is in this one. Many of the new little details range from trivial to wonderful oshiiiiii moments.

If anything, the visual quality is far beyond anything I've seen from Gainax so far and that alone merits a watch. For now, it's "more of the same" and while I guess that can be slightly disappointing for anyone expecting a revelation, I myself am more than anxious to see how it all comes together in the later movies and just how much has been changed. The preview at the end sure hints at great things to come. Including Asuka~
