...in the end it tried way too hard to have a hip, '90s attitude, and most of the characters were just annoying knockoffs of the classic characters they tried to pay homage to. Watching Sylvestor get nearly torn in half every time he tried to eat Tweety was fine, but when it happens to a cute kitten like Furball, it just felt cruel.

Agreed. The fact that the Animaniacs were all-new meant that the writers had to create a brand-new mythos and humor for them, instead of rehashing. Yeah, there's still the nods and winks toward the old days, but for the most part it was all their own world.
I love both Animaniacs and Tiny Toons, but in this case I'm glad that Animaniacs gets the nod first.
