Try Sygate Personal Firewall.
It is adequately customizable, monitors activities in an efficient way, isn't too intrusive and blocks incoming malware very well. If you opt for it, go for version 5.5. I've heard the newer 5.6 has potential bugs/holes, but that would certainly require confirmation. 5.5 can be found here. Jam it back in, in the dark.
