At my home home, I take off my shoes but wear slippers unless walking on carpet. When I'm at school, living in my apartment, I have this little carpeted hallway leading to my room where I keep my shoes and walk around the apartment barefoot except in the kitchen. When I'm in the kitchen, I keep on slippers.
My roommates seem to take their shoes off wherever they feel comfortable to take them off so occasionally I end up tripping over my male roommate's giant and heavy boots...especially if I'm walking around in the dark. But they walk around barefoot otherwise.
If it makes any difference, my roommates are white and I am Asian. None of us ask other people to take off their shoes, but they usually do on their own volition. Sometimes, I guess if they're feeling lazy or the floor looks dangerously messy, they don't. There are no giant rules about it in my apartment and we dont' really address it or anything, but I ask people to take their shoes off if they're going to be in my room for a while.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
