Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (a thorough, spoiler-free review)

I got this game on the 16th of this month, and have been playing it alot since then (I beat it earlier today). I played in Normal Mode, so that I'll have a better sense of the controls the second time around when I play it again in Hard Mode.

Now, on to the review. If you've been following the video reviews on IGN or Gametrailers, or have read the review at RPGFan, leading up to the release date, they've pretty much not had too good of things to say about it. So, having already reserved it before listening/watching/reading these reviews, I was a tad skeptical at first. However, after the first area/level/town (Kalm) I began to thoroughly enjoy it. The only annoying thing in the beginning was the controls for the gun. As you may know, there is a "Config" tab in the main menu that allows you to set the speeds of the different cameras (i.e. horizontal/vertical/inverted/normal gun sight and horizontal/vertical/inverted/normal regular [out of battle]) and also designate whatever button you please to the numerous controls (i.e. shoot, jump, etc). I left the buttons as-is, but adjusted the cameras to my liking. Granted it took a while to get used to my choices, it became second nature by the second or third level/area.

Battles are fairly straight forward. You can either run in with guns blazing, which I tend to do unless I'm absolutely certain I'll get my ass kicked, or you can take the strategic route and utilize any rocks/walls/pipes/doors/etc for cover, while peeking out to pick off your foes when you feel it's safe to do so. Sometimes the aim/sight of your gun goes a little off when your trying to home in on an enemy, but not much. The battles are loads of fun and get your blood pumpin', really enjoyable.

Now for the voice actors. Sometimes SE doesn't make the best choices for their voice cast *cough*Mena Suvari*cough-cough* but this game is an exception. the guy who plays Vincent does lots of anime work, well...I don't watch anime anymore but I remember he was Shishio on that Kenshin show and was also the bad guy in an anime about wolves, and I must say he's quite good. I should point out that he intentionally made his voice deeper for the Vincent you play than the Turk Vincent you see in the numerous flash backs (which sounds more natural than the in-game Vincent). Either way though, he's still good, A.

Yuffie Kisaragi...not bad. Played again by the same girl who played her in the KH games, although slightly more over-the-top...which gets annoying sometimes. Overall though, I love her character, and despite the actress' over-the-topness, it's obvious she's very energetic and into her role, which is never a bad thing, A-.

Cid Highwind...meh. Though he talks like I imagined he would...the actor doesn't portray him quite as well as he could (I'm a poet and I didn't even knowet... >_>). If he put a little more energy into his role he'd be loads better, C.

Cloud Strife...also meh. I'm really not sure why SE hires screen actors for voice over work, other than for publicity. It would seem they are two different types of acting that require their own training. I really wish they looked a little harder to find a more suitable voice for Cloud, although this guy does get his attitude right. He did a bit better in Advent Children, but still...not as energetic/enthusiastic as he could be, C.

Barret Wallace...interesting. From what little I heard of his voice, it would seem SE hired a new guy to play his part than the one we heard in Advent Children, who I thought suited him very well. Not that this guy's bad...just maybe a bit...different, B.

Tifa Lockhart...HURRAY! This actress fits Tifa perfectly, just as I imagined her to sound like. She was quite good in Advent Children, and she's wowed me again, A.

Cait Sith...wow! I didn't really like him in Advent Children, mainly because I didn't get to hear him talk enough to get used to his Irish/Scottish accent, but he makes it work really well in this game. Funny, enthusiastic, awesome, A+.

Reeve Tuesti...amazing! This actor played Mister Tokuoka in the .hack//Liminality series, and I liked him alot then too. He suits Reeve quite well, and is into his role, A+.

Shalua Rui...WOW! I love this actress, never heard her before, but she is right up there with Reeve and Cait Sith. The way she moves her voice with Shalua's interesting body language is absolutely amazing, A++.

Lucrecia Crescent...also WOW! I never really thought about what she would sound like, but looking back to when I played the original FFVII, this actress fits her perfectly, and is VERY into her role. Almost more so than Shalua. During some of the darker flash backs, she is very emotional (in a good way) and really draws you into what she's feeling, very powerful, A++.

Hojo...hmm. Just as I imagined he'd sound like, this actor is quite good, though a bit squeaky. During the flash backs, where you see him the most, you really love to hate him, A.

[Just a few more, bear with me lol]

Shelke the Transparent...sounds more like KOS-MOS (for those of you who have played the Xenosaga games, for those of you who haven't, it means she sounds slightly robotic, not much emotion. It works for KOS-MOS because...well...she's an android, she's supposed to sound like that). There are times when some emotion shines through and she does a little better, but for the most part...meh, C-.

Azul the Cerulean...not bad. He has a booming, menacing voice that suits his massive size well. Sounds good, A-.

Rosso the Crimson...awesome! Her wicked Transylvanian accent is amazing, menacing, and at the same time beautiful. Methinks this is the same actress who played Helba in the .hack games, just using a Transylvanian accent, but I can't say for sure. So, to sum up: kick ass! A++.

Nero the Sable...*shivers*. This is one creepy dude, I must say, and his voice doesn't make him sound any sweeter (but that's a good thing). His voice matches his character well, bravo buddy! A.

Weiss (pronounced "Vice") the Immaculate...hmm. It's clear he's the main bad guy from early on in the game, as most of the DG (or "Deep Ground") soldiers yell "hail Weiss!" before certain fights. He sounds good, evil in a badass way, A.

And that's it for the voice actors, hope you liked my thorough review of them.

I'm not going to bother much with the music portion of the game, as most of you own or have heard the Japanese OST. However, I will say that there are some unreleased tracks that are really good. I started a thread in the Audio Requests forum, seeking out anyone who can rip the unreleased tracks from the game. So if you can, head on over there and post them in a yousendit/send space/etc link.

Finally, the graphics. I remember reading (I think RPGFan's review) that the graphics were uneven or recycled tile sets or something...but disregard that 'cus the graphics rock! the motion actors did well with the characters, and the backgrounds are vast, detailed, and fun to look at. My only complaint is the lip synching (SP?). SE worked real hard to change the US version of the game, so why couldn't they lip synch? It looks so much better when they do that (like in KH1 and KH2), it helps you get more into the story. They obviously lip synch for the Japanese version but...looks wierd on this side of the Pacific.

Overall, a great game. I don't consider it a flaw like other reviewers do, it's definately worth the buy.

My overall score? You really want to know? ... ... ... you sure?? Ok then...

Does anyone have any more leads on how to rip the unreleased tracks? In the request forum I posted the Extra Missions and their positions that have the green music capsules, if any one needed that info.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Back to what randomwab said...

Spoiler:
I seem to recall Weiss saying that he (himself) was in SOLDIER, so maybe he was the one on that mission...

Makes sense. And ya, come to think of it:

Spoiler:
I do recall the G Reports saying that the person who sealed Genesis died during the process. And since Angeal is the only character, aside from Zack, who doesn't make it into FFVII, that seems to prove it.

As much as I liked the secret ending, I don't really think there needs to be a spinoff of DoC (however, I think they should keep the spinoffs of FFVII goin' strong, that Tifa idea is rather interesting, with Barret as the supporting character. But I think the series should end with Cloud, since he's my all time favorite character, and also since he started this whole shebang in the first place). They wrapped up Vincent's story just fine, I was 100% satisfied with the story after I beat the game the first time, and even more so the second time in Extra Hard Mode.

Spoiler:
Is Nero part of Genesis? Because to me, when the guy said "My brother" it just screamed to me that he was Nero (since Nero was the only person in Deepground/Tsviets who called Weiss "brother". And is it me, or was Nero just a tad too intimate with Weiss? Kind of creeped me out.

Ah, sometimes it wasn't clear whether they were blood brothers or not. Thanks for clearing that up

What's Blu Ray? Isn't it the disc reader used in the PS3?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Keep in mind, this is Final FANTASY. Nothing in any of these games/movies is supposed to be realistic (if they were anything normal, like earth normal, it wouldn't be as "fantastic" now would it?). The fight scenes in AC attest to that. I don't think SE wants you to focus on the specifics of gravitational pull and the like, keeping it magical and unreal is what the series is all about, unless you haven't picked that up by now

The one-winged angel guy is Angeal, Zack's mentor in SOLDIER (he's the one that passes the Buster Sword down to Zack). The guy in the red coat's name is Genesis, Gackt portrayed him in the secret DoC FMV.

...I thought PSPs and their games didn't have region protection, because the DS and Gameboy don't.

I was speaking idiomatically.

didn't they said that the blu-ray version will kind of be a director-cut where there would be some new scene?
Yes, it is going to be a "director's cut", with new/additional scenes and edited already existant scenes. Hopefully the new/edited scenes will flesh out the story more, there's more than enough action already.
