Seems Nintendo made the effort of making their PAL VC games full screen, but Sega hasn't. Mega Drive games run just like they used to with the big ol' borders of doom. Go Sega! And you'll get TG-16 games on your service, Conan. It's only Australia and New Zealand that miss out on the awesome.

I checked my Freeloader box, couldn't see a number anywhere on it and I don't know where the hell the manual's gone. So I set my GC back up and chucked the disc in. It's version 1.04b. Guess that's the FAILURE version.

I'm having some weird problems with my pointer (on both controllers) in the Wii's main menu screens, also during Wii Play. It's not moving smoothly at all, it'll sort of lag across and twisting the hand icon causes it to leap all over the place. I've tried messing with the sensitivity options, but that doesn't help. The sensor bar's not blocked or anything. I've tried resynching the controller, doesn't do anything. I'm not sitting too close or too far away. There's no super bright lights that could mess up the sensor. It works fine in Zelda, Rayman and Monkey Ball. I have no idea what's up. It was worse yesterday, to the point where I was forced to use the Classic Controller to navigate the menu. I really fucking hope I don't need to return this to Nintendo Australia, I'll probably never see it again. I'll try setting it up in another room tomorrow or something, see if it's still demented.

Aside from my usual drama with Nintendo launch hardware, this is a pretty brilliant piece of TINY. Wii Sports turned out to be a bajillion times more entertaining than I thought, boxing is bloody hilarious in two player. Especially when the victory music kicks in. BOOP BOOP BUP BOOP BOOP. Bowling is the game of nightmares as I keep spinning the ball to the right NO MATTER WHAT and my right handed friend kept spinning it to the left. But it's still fun throwing the ball into another lane. :]

Wii Play is extremely simplistic, but this is pretty common knowledge so I've just wasted a sentence! Cow Racing for example, only has the one track. Each of the games is designed to test a different motion, basically. From aiming in Target Shooting (which stars the Duck Hunt ducks every now and then!) to full 3D movement of the controller in Fishing. And although simple, most of the games have good replay value. It's nice to just sit back and play some Laser Hockey or whatever. Ping Pong and Tanks are addictiiiiive.

Monkey Ball is honestly, frustrating beyond belief. So many times I'm playing it and just wanting normal control via the joystick. ;_; Most of the mini games are pretty awkward and too complex for their own good, too. Rayman however is gooooold. The boss levels are like Time Crisis/Virtua Cop, very cool stuff. The Rabbids so need their own game next time.

I'm loving the Virtual Console. Especially now that it's been discovered that Australia and NZ can simply change their console region to the UK and that'll log on to their Shopping Channel. The points transfer across and everything! So we can get TG-16 games afterall! =) CANNOT WAIT until I track down another points card tomorrow and finally be able to play Bonk's Adventure. GUNSTAR HEROES is also headed to the VC next week (America and PAL regions). And ALIEN CRUUUSH. <3

Oh yeah there's some game called Zelda. That's been consuming my entire weekend.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Oh, it's good to know I'm not alone with this. :] Firmware update plz Nintendo. I'm sorta getting used to it, still horribly annoying though. It still jitters and craps up when I moved the system into the lounge room today, doesn't matter where I stand, so it's gotta be the Wii itself. I rang Nintendo Australia for lol and was told I'd have to pay $60 or something to ship it and wait six to eight weeks for them just to look at it. Great service they have. Fuck that.

In pants expanding news I took advantage of the whole region changing thing to grab TG-16 games. Downloaded Bonk's Adventure and Bomberman '93. SO AWESOME. First time I've ever played anything from the system before. They also had Star Soldier, Dungeon Explorer and Victory Run. Are any of these games worth it guys? =o

Yeah, I've tried that. No changes though. =o After a bit of Google'ing'ing the depths of other (terrible) forums, there's a few others with this same lagging, glitchy pointer issue and it seems it might have been caused from the second firmware update. Because I know mine was working smoothly when I turned it on for the first time. ;_;

I'll just wait it out. The games play fine (except Wii Play), so I'll see if they fix it in the next update which shoooould be December 20th because that's when the weather channel rolls out.

I think the second update was for some screen burn in reduction or something. =o

Anyway hey, my camera's terrible and Photobucket made it even worse, but this is what it's like trying to navigate the menu. No matter where I stand, where the sensor bar is, or where the Wii itself is in the house. It can either get worse than this or slightly better at random!

Yeah, but it does the same thing with both of my controllers. I doubt both would be stuffed at the exact same thing. ;_;

I'd get a replacement from the store, but I was a stupid cunt and bought VC games which are only linked to the console itself, so I'd lose those and have wasted money on the cards. Duuuunno, duuuunno, the joys of launch hardware.

Oh man I'm having endless drama with the Wii. The problem's just getting worse somehow in the menu, and Wii Play is now completely unplayable. The store won't give me an exchange or a refund, telling me it's up to Nintendo.

Nintendo Australia will charge me for postage, and their fee to look at it (even if they actually discover it's fucked, I have to pay them). So there's about another $90 there. Not only that but they don't refund Wii Points if a new machine is sent back unlike America. That's $60 gone there. This is fucking stupid and I'm pretty sure something or everything here is illegal. What the hell is the point of a warranty then. I need to get our drunk consumer affairs into exciting drunk action.

$400 wasted? Seems so!

Hmm, I was told over the phone that they don't. But who knows, the guy I was talking to didn't really know what I was even talking about "ARE YOU SURE YOU READ THE MANUAL? THAT CAN HELP" "Yes, yes, I've read the manual" "IT HAS A TROUBLESHOOTING SECTION!" "I know it does!"

Just to be absolutely sure it is the actual system, do anyone with a Wii by chance live nearby (peeack?), so that you can try using it on another setup?
Yeah, I've taken it over to a friends place to compare it with his (haha comparing wii's hahalolol). Tried his sensor bar, Wii controller and everything on my machine, but still had the same problems. His was fine. ;_;

I think it was trying to read a GC disc, anyway. It read it, but in the process of doing so moving the Wii remote over different buttons it flickered all over the place. It isn't doing it anymore though, which is a good thing.
Nah, it does it all the time. Even if there's no disc in there spinning away.

Anyway, I'll keep at it until I get JUSTICE.

An American Wii works out at roughly $320 AUD, so with that $50 shipping on top, you're saving like a whopping $30.

Dunno, maybe you should wait and see what Datel get up to with the Wii Freeloader first. Then you could buy the system here and import the games. Although I'm so bitter towards Nintendo Australia at the moment I can't recommend buying anything Nintendo related locally. :]

Infernal ZOOMIN' AWWN IN for a second.

The weather channel is avaliable (here, at least!) You guys should check or something. It's pretty nice. When you hover over somewhere with evil lightning bolts it even makes thunder noises and the controller shakes. WOW MEGA INNOVATION! You're able to check out the next five days of weather, and stuff. The maps are provided by NASA, serious business. But I was hoping it'd fix my fuck up from the last firmware, it didn't!

It's the goddamn Gamecube and N64 all over again. Now Sony has nothing to worry about; by the time the heavy hitters for Wii come along, there will be at least over 20 PS3 games out. There's already about 5 notable titles in March alone.

The Wii simply should not have this excuse; if it's less graphic-heavy than its competitors and easier to develop, there should be more games available.

Now for some possible Grubuttals

Fun fact, CVG is a British website. So this is likely true. For PAL regions. Don't flip out just yet!
Also I've been in touch with the department of fair trading, Nintendo either replaces/fixes my machine or gets fined. Man, I've dealt with dodgy weirdo no-name companies about warranty related stuff that were nicer than bloody Nintendo. It's going to be ages before anything happens though (holiday season and all that), so I'm stuck with this faulty shit box. =)

Pretty sure I read somewhere on the internet that they'd kicked production up a notch with their spice weasel, but who knows. It can't be that hard, they just have to melt down Atari 2600's and TV remotes. This is the first console since forever to get a proper 'simultaneous' worldwide launch though. Some stores here still haven't recieved anymore units since launch!

Yeah, I really hope they don't stay exclusive to EB here for too long. =\ The two times I've purchased cards went so well! "Can I get one of those points cards for the Wii?" "The what?" Dunno what the stock situation's like at my local one at the moment though. Pretty tempted to get one for Mario Kart 64. ;_;

Quote:
Wii's GameCube region lock busted
No Freeloader required for region free backward compatibility!

Sometimes, fiddling with your new toy can be useful. And it seems that by fiddling with their PAL Wii, some clever chaps have achieved something not thought possible with an un-modified console. A user of a certain forum (that we won't name because of some questionable activities, legally speaking) who goes by the handle 'dolqube' apparently decided to experiment with his Wii console's GameCube boot function. And he found that it's actually possible to run original NTSC GameCube discs on a PAL Wii console without modification, and without the use of Datel's Freeloader software.

The method goes like this: Pop a PAL GameCube disc into the Wii, and head to the 'Disc Channel'. A GameCube logo should be up on the screen. Point the Wii Remote's cursor over the 'Start' option so it's highlighted, and while keeping your hand steady, press the eject button on the Wii. For about one second, the 'Start' option will remain active. In this window of time, hit the A button on the Wii Remote and then swap out your ejected PAL GCN disc with an NTSC (Japanese or USA) disc, which the Wii will accept into the drive.

If you get it right, the Wii should boot up in GameCube mode and run your NTSC game! We've tried it with several different games from both the USA and Japan, and after learning the timing, we got every game running on our PAL Wii first time.

What's great about this trick is that unlike many 'disc swap' import tricks in the past (such as those that worked on the Sega Saturn and the original PlayStation) this one doesn't require any physical modification of your console, and probably won't even harm it since the Wii is simply using its own disc loading mechanism the whole time. Apparently the reason it works is that the Wii takes a couple of seconds to power itself down to GameCube mode, but for the sake of brevity it tells the disc to boot before the transformation is complete. It is the window between the two that allows this trick to work.
Just tried it earlier, got my NTSC copies of Four Swords Adventure and Tales of Symphonia to work. Haven't tried the others yet. You have to be REALLY quick when swapping, like Clark Kent in the phone booth.

Not that it really matters to me, but would that make PAL games playable on an NTSC system?

Are there any games worth anything that were only released in PAL regions? o=
Nah, it only works on PAL machines. You're not missing much though. According to Wiki, here's a list of PAL GC games that didn't make it to America;

- Asterix & Obelix XXL
- Butt Ugly Martians: Zoom or Doom
- Cocoto Funfair (more like unfunfair)
- Cocoto Kart Racer
- Cocoto Platform Jumper
- Conan: The Dark Axe
- Doshin the Giant
- Gadget Racers (this made it to America via PS2, it's a half arsed toy car racer/adventure game)
- International Superstar Soccer 2
- International Superstar Soccer 3
- Largo Winch: Empire Under Threat (hilariously awful ahoy!)
- MaxPlay Classic Games Volume 1 (unlicensed game containing rip off versions of Asteroids, Centipede and stuff like that. I bought this cheap years back and the GC didn't even recognize the disc, quality!)
- Neighbours from Hell (?)
- UEFA Champions League 2004-2005
- V-Rally 3

Look at all that excitement! Whoa!

You'd best get another Nunchuck. I mean, a lot of games only need the Wiimote by itself, but some require the Nunchuck. Like Boxing in Wii Sports.
