I've been raised with the idea of shoes = outside. I don't wear any slippers inside, but I think that it's a Korean thing (I know that there's a lot of Japanese families that have indoor slippers, which I think it's kinda strange...of course, it could just be my family)
When I'm going to a American/Typically Non-Asian house, I always stop by the doorstop and ask if I should take my shoes off. When I was younger, the parents/friend usually looked at me weird and told me it's fine, but nowadays, I usually do.
I noticed that I'm a bit more lenient towards the shoe rule if it's hardwood floors.... =/
