Back in Time II - Batman the Caped Crusader (Radio funk mix) It's funky, alright. I remember playing this game on my Commodore just for the music. I never beat it though I came pretty close. This track is a faithful arrangement with some improvements in the bass and the mid-range synths. That I was going to nominate it soon only speaks further for this piece.
Home Alone (NES Game Rip) - House: I hold chiptunes to a high standard and this one fell slightly short for me. The melody is good but I found the choice of sounds to be too shrill and the bassline to be extremely rudimentary. For a title that came out late in the NES's lifespan, I honestly expect better harmony between layers. Mass Effect Original Soundtrack - Criminal Elements: This was a lot better than I expected, which was largely a dull, atmospheric drone. The tension is very palpable but not so overpowering that it becomes a typical march. I loved the blippy synth effects in the background - nicely understated. A decent track. Midnight Resistance (Genesis Game Rip) - Flood of Power (BGM 1): Some higher quality Genesis music. Yay! The melody is great and the composer paced it very well. There's a lot of positive synergy between the samples used. Makes me want to track the game down and play it. Nice choice. Mr. Nutz (SNES Game Rip) - Ice Scream: This one manages to use the better half of the SNES's sound card's capabilities, though I felt the tempo was a lttle sluggish. I imagine this would have a larger impact if heard at 1.5 times its current speed. It's not bad but I think the pace needs to match the tone. OTSU Club Music Compilation Vol. 1 - Last Regrets -Tsukasa Remix- Nothing to criticize here. It's spacey, upbeat and energetic. That's the trifecta for me. This one's a keeper. Space Megaforce (Game Rip) - Black Hole Anomalies: Overlooking the volume issue, this is pretty good. There's an oh-so slight Latin rhythm, but it changes things up fairly frequently and offers up a pretty groovy ride. If someone could find or supply a copy of this with improved volume, that would be wonderful. Verytex (Game Rip) - Act 1 (The Void of Space): This one starts up auspiciously and doesn't disappoint throughout. I like the tone a lot - it's kind of spacey but not - and the melody is wonderful. Great energy and great sound. It has a lot of competition this week but definitely deserves a placement. Points 2 Points: Verytex (Game Rip) - Act 1 (The Void of Space) 2 Points: Back in Time II - Batman the Caped Crusader (Radio funk mix) 1 Point: Mass Effect Original Soundtrack - Criminal Elements 1 Point: OTSU Club Music Compilation Vol. 1 - Last Regrets -Tsukasa Remix- Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
