Nice additions recently to VC. I might actually pick up DKC - I'll have to see. I have a DKC2 SNES cart and I didn't really "feel" DCK3 when I played it. However, we spent quite a bit of time in college playing DKC 1 week when we rented it. I remember it was a barrel of laughs as I would always hold down the run button and blast through the stages at break-neck speed, causing my roommates much distress lol...

Games like DKC are what VC was made for. This game still holds up fine today as far as graphics/gameplay: it's just plain fun. Anyone could pick it up and play it, which goes along with the philosophy of the Wii...

Anyone else excited for the Neo Geo? I sure hope it hits here in America.
I would purchase Samurai Showdown 1 & 2 for sure; it's a given. God, SS2 was the only fighting game in which I could beat up on our Japanese exchange student friend in college. (I used the guy with the stone pillar.) Good times!

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Wow, way cool. I might plop down 20 points in the next week or so and pick up either DKC/Super Ghouls & Ghosts or DCK/Castlevania 4...

The only thing holding me back from SG&G possibly is that there isn't a save feature iirc. That was a very, very unforgiving game, so lack of save feature would have a big impact for me.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I'm continually astonished at how slow they are releasing games.
I think this must've been the plan all along. The way the VC shop is organized, there will be no way to find anything once there are hundreds of games. I mean, scrolling through page after page that lists only 4 titles per page? It would take 20 minutes to purchase Zelda if there were 100 NES titles in front of it for cryin' out loud. I really hope they revamp the VC shop for easier browsing/purchase with future updates.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Today's Virtual Console in the US (5/21/07):

Blazing Lazers (TG16)
Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES)

Awesome! DKC2 just got downloaded!
That is a pretty solid line-up. Blazing Lazers is supposedly the be-all-end-all shooter on TG16. Streets of Rage 2 is a great addition. I would download DKC2 if I didn't own the SNES cart; I'm kind of waiting on DKC3 at this point.

Let's hope they keep up the quality uploads like this!

There's a bit of a difference there unfortunately...Nintendo owns the Donkey Kong characters but not the James Bond ones.
There was such a following for Goldeneye that it would be a poor decision for the owners of the IP not to allow it to be released in some form, whether XBLA, Virtual Console, or some sort of retro collection on disc. To me, since these games originally appeared on N64 and the Wii is selling like hotcakes, Virtual Console would seem to make the most sense to me. (Unless the 360's online community would value-add more to the experience.)

Virtual Console today in the US (5/28/07):
J.J. & JEFF (TG16)
The more they release these TG16 VC games, the more I realize what quirky little titles were on that console. Which is great.

Is that right, 4.7 million VC downloads? I would say that is beyond successful. The cheapest ones are 5 bucks, so that means Nintendo has probably taken in at least $25 million on VC alone for Wii. That is amazing, considering that so many of the titles currently on there are old NES ones no one cares about, etc.

I can't even find screenshots on the 'net of Deadmoon for TG16. Perhaps when I see some I'll remember what game this is. Interesting choice of releases - I thought Millon's Secret Castle had already been released though?

Even though it's been part of other compilation packages, Sonic 2 is still a solid VC release. Of course, there were better candidates for a more immediate release perhaps.

NES Open Tournament Golf (NES)

This week on Virtual Console US (7/2):

Super Mario Bros. 2 (US) (NES)
I will be getting this game, even though I have the cart. Honestly, I have more fun playing this than SMB3, even though it is supposedly the "better" of the NES Mario games. For me, I just have more "fun" playing SMB2. I love the graphics, the music is ultra-catchy, the warp system rocks, bosses are fun... The unique elements such as grabbing a key and running from the masks or or bombing walls really advanced the Mario gameplay from SMB1. (Yeah I know SMB2 isn't "true" Mario - sacrilege! ) Shy Guys ftw!

Edit: I didn't know this, but you can "rate" VC games on Nintendo.com. Perhaps we should all rate the crap VC games as a 1 and the good games as a 5 and Nintendo will get the hint?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Considering the time of SMB3's release the game really should have had a save function. SMB2 is a much quicker game so I can forgive the lack of a save system.
So true. I did play the GBA version of SMB3 and the save feature made it much more enjoyable. The only way I got much mileage out of the NES version was to make liberal use of the warp flutes.

Of course not. Why would they want to put something up from a system that did REMARKABLY well?
They're too busy porting SNES games to GBA.

Silent Debuggers looks interesting, but in the end probably not worth the price. I found a good review site (it may have been posted somewhere before, I don't recall) for TG-16 VC reviews: http://www.virtual-turbo.com/ It seems to be consistently updated with full reviews of games.

After seeing some screenshots of Paper Mario I'm kind of excited about this download. It seems to have more of an old-school Mario flavor than TTYD did.

Nice! Pretty good VC week imho. I read the IGN review of Kirby on VC and they basically said it's the best game ever made. Pretty high praise for an old NES title...

This week on Virtual Console US (7/30/07):

Drop Off (TG16)
Dynamite Headdy (Genesis)
Star Soldier (NES)

Um...meh.
Wow, meh doesn't even begin to describe the mediocrity of this week's releases...

I wonder if they would consider releasing Gameboy games? Metriod II was pretty good, along with a ton of other titles of course.

Why do people want to buy games that have already been rereleased in another format?
I don't feel like buying a TG16 on Ebay, hoping the controllers aren't completely worn out and worthless, and hooking it up through an RF adapter just to play Atomic Robo Kid: TG-16: Atomic Robokid (This is the TG16 game I'm waiting for.)

For a fee of only $5, it's worth it for me for the convenience of being able to play SMB2 on the Wii which I always have hooked up, vs. having to hook up my old NES even though I own one and also the SMB2 cartridge. It's cheaper than buying a new 72-pin connector and opening the NES and installing it so that the screen doesn't flash.

Where I do agree with the argument against VC games is if people are buying a ton of them, like 20 or more VC games. Then, it would probably be cheaper in the long run to get the actual console + games off Ebay. But then, you still need to have the console hooked up, through the right connectors, to play the game.

In reality, I would rather emulate most games rather than mess with VC, but for a few classics I would play very often, such as SMB2, it's nice to have the option.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Adventure Island is extremely simplistic for a platformer. I had Adventure Island for Gameboy. It was one of those games you had to play through in one sitting, and you definitely could due to its simplistic nature. I'm not saying it's a bad game, just simple.

Also CD games are nice news but uhhhhh... where's the space for it all, Nintendo? A harddrive would REALLY be appreciated, you know.
Agreed, and instead of a proprietary HD that costs 1000% more than a normal USB HD, I would like to be able to hook up the HD of my choosing via the USB ports. After all, if they're not going to do this, why have USB ports?

While I agree that I doubt they'd ever allow your own USB HDD to be hooked up to the thing, I can imagine them releasing a proprietary storage solution later on, and charging an arm and a leg for it.
Unfortunately I can imagine this as well:

(Nintendo): "Here's a 1GB USB drive for only $100. Look, Xbox360's new hard drive is $180, so ours is way cheaper."

Me: "Bye N, I'm buying a 360 and dropping my Wii on Reggie from the top of a tall building. And if I see that Miyamoto dude he'll get the business end of my Wii-mote nunchuk."

I was speaking idiomatically.

Okay, so apparently Lost Levels and Sin & Falcon Punchiment hit the American VC today. Same dealy as PAL regions, 600 points for Lost Levels and 1200 for S&M. Oh hell I'll just text quote block you to death. :]
Are these limited-time offers in NA also then? (I don't have my wireless connection set up to get this Wii-thingies currently.)

I might actually pick up DKC3, as it's the only one of the three I haven't played completely through. For me, what the series lacks in gameplay it makes up for in presentation.

I've just picked up SMB3 on VC and noticed that in the first level there is a "cascading" effect on the right-hand side of the screen when you move forward. (Blocks of color appear/disappear, similar to artifacting in 3D games.) Is this normal, due to the secret warp whistle behind-the-graphics hidden feature of this level? I couldn't remember from the original game. Or, is it crummy emulation?

Jam it back in, in the dark.
