The Military.

I know we have some men and possibly women here at GFF serving in the Armed Forces.

So what I want to know is...

What country you are currently serving for, what particular branch, and MOS/Rating (your job). Have you ever seen action or deployment into a hostile area? So far what has the experience been like for you?

I recently re-enlisted into the United States Naval Reserve as an RP. There is an extremely high chance I will see duty in Iraq or Afghanistan and should we engage in a war with Iran, I will probably be deployed there as well.

The DEP isn't shit. So don't think because you are a DEP that you will make it through training. My suggestion is that you get yourself into shape. Exceed their physical requirements before you go there so you can focus on the training, not how bad the smokings are.

The A3 does. I wasn't impressed with the M-16A2 that I've used in the past... the rifle just doesn't have the same sturdy feel to it that the old M-14s had.

Also, half of boot camp is physical, the other half is mental. Going in with a pissy ass arrogant attitude is a sure way to get your DIs pissed at you and the rest of your platoon. The DI's job is to break you down both mentally and physically. Arrogant people have a harder fall when they fail.

My dad, whos the hardest working man ive ever met, said the marines taught him to never do a job half way. My dad is also the most physically fit man ive ever met. Im not talking about being a meat head, im talking about endurance and physique. Hes in his late 40's and lifts, boxes, and does cardio almost every day after work. He attributes this all to the things he learned while in the marines.

Ive always held those who serve our country in the highest regard. Ive even considered joining myself many times, but my dad and mom always insisted I go to college. It still never hurts to show respect though.

Im not saying that everybody who joins is a hero, but it still takes a certain person to get the job done.

Have you considered being an Officer once you get out of college? O-1 pay is better than E-6 pay.

Yeah if you don't mind the PT then the Army wouldn't be that much different... I believe you'd have to go to some small basic training for the Army but it is only like 2-3 weeks, nothing compared to the real deal.

Why would they be cutting you if they think you are so knowledgable? :/ seems counter productive, you'd think they would want to keep the hard workers.

BTW we had people bitching about a 30lb ruck on the 3k, 5k, and 8k forced marches in the Army. People just like to bitch, as long as they do it leave 'em be.

Insightful. I think some of these problems are common to all of the branches. The Army has its fair share of shitbags and worthless bums but usually at some point they get found out and stuck on shit duties or smoked... either way it is nice to see some punishment inflicted on them.

If you want to be hard, don't pretend to be. If you want some advice before you go to bootcamp, just remember that the worst part is the fuck fuck games and as soon as someone takes charge and leads the rest of the douches and gets some order, they'll fuck up less and you'll push less, unless of course you like the quarterdeck in which case by all means be a sheep and follow.

Oh and don't lock your knees out... and stay hydrated... unless you prefer the silver bullet...

Oh and someone said earlier that they watched the boot grads run 4 miles in 20 minutes... physically impossible. There isn't a boot class <u>on this planet</u> that could run 4 miles in 30 minutes, let alone 20. Just b/c some of em managed to weasel their way through boot, doesn't mean they arent still fat nasties.

Oh and Parn, are you sure you arent a Marine in a chair-nazi's body? You should go through the real blue-green program instead of the blue-[tan] program. If you keep up the bitching about the branch you'll win a medal in the chairforce... and offered a beer in the Corps.

There is a reason why people still argue about the source of Jarhead. It did not however come from other countries, Marines got that name from the Navy.

Donkeys? Here is another one... I found a couple others, one involving the leather collars of the old uniforms, "leather neck". I've heard another from an old Navy vet who said that it came from the fact that the marines used to be the people who had to take the admirals piss jar out and throw it overboard. Then again most people believe it comes from the lost of the Marines. As for your explanation, I can not find any support for it. I'd love to see any sources you have for it.

Naw don't worry about it, all the different branches give each other shit. That is the way it has always been but the fact is when we all meet out on the battlefield we work together like brothers.
