I also have the 500GB model you linked to and yes the power saving problem apparent on Linux is hurting me in Mac OS aswell. It's very annoying when watching videos and suddenly the HD switches back to USB 1, dropping frames like crazy all the while you think it's a CPU issue.
 I have had no problems with it on Windows XP though, I think you're safe as long as you're using that. Jam it back in, in the dark.
