If you're willing to fork out a bit more money, you can get a widescreen monitor that supports proper 1:1 pixel mapping. That is, it won't stretch your 4:3 content at all. I have a new BenQ FP241W with a native resolution of 1920x1200. If I load up a game in 1280x1024, the aspect will be preserved and there will be a black box around the viewable are. Best of both worlds.
Yeah, my HP w2207 does that too. It's quite nice for the few games I play that don't have widescreen support.

And to be honest, widescreen is the future. Almost all new games can do widescreen resolutions, and it's a huge improvement in just about every way. I can't imagine not gaming in 1680x1050 anymore.
