I've never actually seen the anime, so I'm going solely on your hint.

The earliest anime on DVD which I know of is Phantom Quest Corp.

If not that, then maybe Ultraman (again, based on the dates of their DVD release).

Wasn't that guy in the first image from Initial D - Fourth Stage? Not sure, but the eyes and hairstyle is definitely something I've seen somewhere before... :/

I've only been following the manga (hence why I first used the manga name) - but yeah, that was indeed a very sad arc. The current manga arc, too, is rather depressing... though it sure gets the fangirls going. >_>

Ok, I only have two series on my laptop, greatly limiting my selection. So this'll probably be easy.

Haha, I was asking for it, putting Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu up there. It's the only series I've watched over three times, beginning to end (more than that for some individual episodes).

Would it be Last Exile? The color and use of CG for the radio reminds me of the style.

Maybe from the scene where they deliver the first letter in the series to this noble's mansion? That face rings absolutely no bells though - don't remember seeing green eyes :/

Khalfan has it dead on. That is indeed Yoshimori from Kekkaishi, in yet another of his attempt at making the ultimate chocolate/cake. A pretty nice series, just saw that episode yesterday.
