Agito looks kind of nifty, but I've yet to see anything impressive about XIII and Versus. That zipper-buckle glove is truly a marvel of terrible design, and that guy already looked like nothing more than a younger version of the spear guy in Laguna's party in VIII.

By new character, do you mean the FF XII Judge there? He just looks like an average boss to me. At least he's not an FF X-2 reject like Nature Girl there, but it's still a really unoriginal design.

The trailer fails due to lack of Afro-Chocobo Guy.
It looks spiffy enough, but it's not like the trailer really showed anything new. I haven't really been keeping up with XIII, but it looked like the trailer was mostly just stuff from the screens they've already released. The goofy dialogue at the end about "Oh no, we've been cursed by the Fal'Cie! Now we're l'Cies!" didn't help. I'm sure it'll be a good game that I'll inevitably play, but until Square shows something that doesn't look like Midgar stretched out into a full game it's impossible for me to get excited about it. *FF XIII in 2013* This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
You couldn't even tell if they were real time from that trailer, since they kept cutting to different battles after every attack. It looked as menu-based as ever from what was shown, and we've already seen screenshots of the menus during battle. Nothing new. At least wait for a more exciting trailer before getting defensive.

- Lithe woman who's tough to handle - Celes - Athletic over-enthusiastic bloke who shouts a lot - Sabin - Perky, annoying upbeat girl - Relm - The one with the swirly eyes - Terra Thankfully it had no emo kid protagonist, but they've been recycling the other archetypes for a long time. Does Vaan get moodier later on in XII? I don't remember him being anything but upbeat. I was speaking idiomatically. |
I was thinking early 90's rapper Wakka considering those buzzed designs. I'll bet he's got a gil sign on the back of his head.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |

Almost anything would be preferable to the bad British pop they went with instead.
These latest trailers are making it look much better than I was expecting, aside from the giggly teen lovers flashbacks. Still waiting to hear more about the battle system and story, but at least the people other than Lightning and Snow seem okay. How ya doing, buddy? |
Yeah, it looks way too bland with no effort put in at all. I was going to make a joke about that, but then I got to thinking and remembered that a lot of the FF boxes have been that way. It just usually looks better because they'll use artwork rather than an CG model, or at least a color other than white for the background.

I'm all for going classy like that PAL FFX cover, but this one just looks like a last minute Photoshop job like Qwarky said. It's the gray gradient in the background that really messes it up, I think. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Sounds like the exact opposite of XII then. The cities seemed a bit too big, and it was weird having all those NPCs while only a few would actually speak.
Having a strictly linear game with nothing much outside of combat and cutscenes isn't necessarily bad. FF XI and XII should've already shown that it's a bad idea trying to compare current Final Fantasy games to the rest of the series. This sounds more like a 3D version of Valkyrie Profile 2 in format if you really are just walking down a single street in the few towns that exist. I suppose a lot of people didn't like that one either, but using linearity as a major complaint is pretty silly. Not every game has to be a sandbox with dozens of sidequests and mini-games to be fun. You say the characters and story are great, and that's all I really need in an RPG. Most amazing jew boots |

Ah, OPM. It's nice to see their reviews are still rage-inducingly terrible after all these years.
At least it gives a pretty good look at the battle system and some nice screens. A lot of those character names are really awful, but I do like Cid's ship being called the Lindblum. Considering the number of other mistakes in the review, I'm just going to hope "Gadot" is another of their typos. I was speaking idiomatically. |
I do have to agree with Shenlon about the menu exposition. Maybe if some of the NPC survivors at the beginning said more than two words it wouldn't be necessary to go read the datalog every time it pops up to find out why the city is crumbling around you.
That being said, I'm at the start of chapter 3 now and I'm enjoying the game so far. I don't know why you people hate Vanille so much. She's quirky, weird, and quickly became my favorite character. It's hilarious watching her skip along and be all "Hey, do you know how to fly that motorbike? Let's steal it, whee!" She's clearly not as ditzy as she's acting, so it's all perfectly bearable. The only character I dislike so far is Lightning. I didn't expect much from her since she looks like Cloud with boobs and Squall's weapon, and she seems to have predictably taken the worst traits from both. The battle system is pretty fun so far. I just got job classes, so it should be even better now. The extreme linearity hasn't bothered me at all yet, which is very surprising. I'm all for a linear game, but all the talk of straight line dungeons had me worried. At any rate, it's already a lot more interesting and fun than FF XII was at the beginning. That's progress!
