Sometimes for comfort, sometimes because it's faster to slip on sandals. I haven't worn them for much more than checking the mail and such for ages, but that was my reasoning when I did.

I think it's the implied assumption that if you are going to wear sandals or flip-flops you must want more breathing room for your feet. If not, why not just wear sneakers or some other closed-toe shoe? I've always thought the point of open-toe footwear was to let your feet breathe. Socks seem to defeat that purpose.

What kind of socks are you wearing that don't let your feet breathe? I used to get really bad eczema on the sides of my feet from wearing sneakers all the time when I was little, so wearing sandals with socks occassionally was far more comfortable.
There's nowhere I can't reach.
