I'm still surprised at how many people are having their college costs paid for by their parents. My siblings and I all have to pay our own, the same for the majority of my friends. (Going to a U.S. university.) We'll be paying it off for the next decade.
Well, I lived with them for about 17 years, so..
Food: 365 * 12.00 * 17 = $74,460
Electricity (used
this as an estimate, not going to bother with rising power costs since we've likely used more all along) : 86.33*12*17 = $17,611.32
Clothing: we bought used or I got my friend's castoffs, so probably around $75 a year = $1275
Birthday and Christmas gifts: they tried to spend around $50 a kid for either so = $1700
... that puts it up to about $95,046, not counting dental costs (medical would have been covered, I was raised in Canada) or extra things we did on vacation, or books for school.
So yeah, about the cost of a cheap house. Kids are pricey.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
