Go with htpp://www.fastmail.fm - Their free service is nothing to write home about, but their paid service has the best spam protection on the net, and it's pretty cheap. It's not intended for the same kind of consumer who would choose gmail, but it certainly has some advantages.

It's ultra-reliable, the site is ultra-fast, and they support POP3 and IMAP-4 for paid accounts. With paid accounts you get a certain amount of free webspace at http://username.fastmail.fm/ which you can also use just as an online dump for important files. It's hard to describe some of the extra features it has to make your email experience just that little bit nicer, but I would never go back to just free email, now.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

The extra services they provide matter to me.

1) Sure, if you're happy with a POP3 service that often isn't up to much.

2) I've had 3 ISPs in the last 2 years. The words "fuck" and "that" spring irresistably to mind

There's nowhere I can't reach.
