In the "Video" drop down menu, there should be a menu option for "Filters", so select that to open the "Filters" dialogue box. Scroll down, and load the filter that's called "Textsub". If you don't have that, then you can probably download it, but it should be there.
Click the "Open" button in the Textsub dialogue box, and then select your SRT, SSA, or ASS file. If your subs aren't in this format, you will need to use a program to convert them, and possibly retime them. I recommend Aegis Sub.
Having done that, just OK everything, and save your AVI. It will take a while. If you want to soft-sub your video instead, you can use VirtualDubMod to put the video into an MKV container. Otherwise, I don't recommend VirtualDubMod.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
