There's usually a little panel on the lower surface that you can unscrew to swap out memory modules. What do they call those weird laptop ones, SO-DIMM or something? Because they aren't the same as the ones in a regular ATX PC it would be hard to find replacements to test, but if there's more than one modules, you can take out one at a time to see if just one is faulty.
If you don't want to do this, you'll have to send it to a service centre. I hope your friend has backups. They might format the hard drive, and then reinstall with a restore disk, if they think that might help. Obviously delete any hardcore porn and warez before sending it in to save embarrasment.
