There's no need to re-encode the file. VSFilter can apply a delay to subtitles while you're watching the film. Just click the tray icon. If you're not using VSFilter to display your subs, then you should be anyway. For some reason, although the program you install is called VSFilter, the tray icon will show up as "DirectVobSub" on some (all?) systems. The program has changed names a few times.
Jam it back in, in the dark.

You should try it with your version, and if that doesn't work... consider upgrading to a new version, perhaps install CCCP for a complete playback solution. There's nowhere I can't reach.
