Yeah. AVI files are in a format that your computer can read. In order for your DVD player to read them, they need to be VOB files, so you need some software to convert them. This process involves converting them from whatever codec they currently are to MPEG-2, which can take some time.
Personally, I don't bother with converting them. I just use either a laptop with TV Out, or my modded xbox, which can play back all kinds of media files.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
