Although I was pretty intensely obsessed with Final Fantasy XII, I am actually at the stage you were at: bought it, picked it up for a few hours, and put it down, thoroughly disgusted.
It wasn't really my high hopes for the game - I was expecting a cheap little fun knockoff sequel. But the game doesn't even deliver, at least thus far, with that. The combat is lame, and the story lamer. There's just something SO two-dimensional about the game that I can't get over.
If I hear that it gets much better, I'll keep at it (it's not very hard after all), but otherwise, I might take it back.
