For basic stuff like that there are any number of photomanipulation programs that will do what you need. GIMP and PSP both cost about a thousand times less than Photoshop and will work great.

I've avoided Photoshop for as long as possible, but after working with CS2 on my Photos for the last month or so and seeing the magical stuff it has (the healing brush is a godsend, the shadows/highlights tool is insane, lens distortion correction, the works.....) I may break down and buy a student license of it.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
