I've always liked Audacity. It is very simple, doesn't have a lot of unnecessary features, and it works quite well.
Until a few years ago, I always used Cool Edit/Cool Edit Pro for things requiring a bigger suite. I don't know if they still make updates, but that program always worked just fine. Jam it back in, in the dark.
