Er, where did you get yours? Every flip-top I've seen has a slot that allows the tray to open at any time.
I'm not sure about modifying the one you have besides like a hammer and chisel, but a "ghetto" technique you could use to fix the problem is to hit the open button and then shut it really quickly. Jam it back in, in the dark.
