Mario and Luigi: Dream Team - 20 Points
This is kind of a weird selection for me. The game got some somewhat valid complaints that many of the gameplay mechanics were reused from prior games (giant battles in particular). That's true, but it's still so goddamn well done that it doesn't matter. It's even a bit heartwarming to watch Luigi come into his own and, by the end of the game, singlehandedly pummel the shit out of Bowser like some sort of mustachioed Ultraman. Plus there's the usual stuff like lighthearted music and genuinely good, funny writing.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - 40 Points
Words can't do this game justice. It takes the melodrama and bad naming schemes of Metal Gear and goes full retard. At its most serious the game is still tongue-in-cheek; at its most absurd, it is indescribable. It ends before the gameplay can possibly get stale, and it has one of the more gratifyingly difficult final bosses I've seen in a long time. I was infuriated at first, but now I feel embarrassed that it took me so long to get good enough to finish it. The game trains you, and you feel like a better player for it. Best of all? According to Kojima, THIS SHIT IS ALL CANON.

If you haven't picked it up yet, you're only doing a disservice to yourself.

My Game of the Year selection and recipient of the remaining 40 Points:

Fire Emblem: Awakening - 40 Points

I thought about nominating the game last year, but I didn't want to be that much of a tool. But now that everyone's had a chance to play it, I can gush. It's a huge game filled with tons of likable characters and memorable battles, and good God dat soundtrack. Class changing is so encouraged and easy to do that no two players' teams are alike, and DLC keeps the game fresh for a very long time. A triumphant return to form after the awful Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, and future entries in the series are going to be judged against this one. It is just that good.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
