Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
![]() ![]() General Info from GameFAQs:
The game is apparently getting a slight bump-up, showing up in stores tomorrow rather than Wednesday. As a staunch... despiser of the original Tactics Advance, I'm going into this game with large amounts of skepticism. However, I've ended up purchasing it because of certain changes that have been confirmed (faster AI movement, more references to the real Ivalice, Seeqs). So, as the last game in the Ivalice Alliance, is anyone else planning on nabbing it? Most amazing jew boots |
No, it's mostly the same. What was nerfed was Concentrate, making Double Sword undisputed.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Nope, I'm just retarded, which Lace has pointed out. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Oh yeah that's right, Libra, it says so in the FAQ I put up top. This is pissing me off then, because I have two Up 2 Clan privileges and I'm not sure why.
I just got to Camoa, and I'm... nondescript. The AI speed is only marginally improved, and I just wish actions and animations could be skipped or sped up. Everything else is fine however, and I do admit the Mastery system for new jobs is better than Job Levels from ol' Final Fantasy Tactics. Just give me a Seeq already, game. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

It is humanly impossible for a game to be slower than Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, I'm sorry. I was practically in tears by the time a single AI-controller character had finally moved and acted.
And I read that random encounters can happen, but they're extremely uncommon. I'm not exactly sure how valid my source was though, so take it with a grain of salt. I was speaking idiomatically. |
As I said earlier, Concentrate has been nerfed, and for good reason; all-around accuracy seems to have been improved substantially. Now it's damage that seems to be affected the most by what direction you attack an enemy, with accuracy only dropping a little bit.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
As for your second question, it's very likely. I never got terribly far in the original Tactics Advance, but A2 uses nearly the same system but with more... stuff added to it. FELIPE NO |
No, I'm with you on the Fitting Room; they really needed to bring back Tactics' Optimize option for it. The only advantage I see to not having Optimize is that it forces you to look through the shop's selection, which ensures that you don't miss any equipment that might offer you new skills for your current job.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Honestly, I don't mind it if a game doesn't take itself too seriously. Some of my favorite moments in Tactics were when the party took a break from Lucavi and did things like, say, activate Worker 8.
As for depth and gameplay, I really don't think you can argue that A2 is lacking in that regard. The second you bust open the menu or take a look at the Bazaar, you see the game is anything but shallow. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
I happen to like that Luso is a bit of an assholish kid. Ramza's timidness is only tolerable for so long. So, yeah, that's kind of why I like Robots and slapstick comedy over "Nobody wants you as king!!". Most amazing jew boots |
Yeah, that's not Final Fantasy Tactics. It's Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
Do you have anything to contribute to A2 discussion, or is this going to continue to diverge towards why Tactics is so awesome? This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Quit trying to goad me with these little one-liners at the end; it's annoying. You know perfectly well that I'm being reasonable here.
I talk about how they should have reimplemented Optimization in the fitting room and you follow up with a tirade about how they could put so many other things from Tactics in. Well, Final Fantasy Tactics is super and all, but I'm talking about the fitting room. In Final Fantasy Tactics A2. And you're not. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Well, you stepped on my toes and then expected me to back off, so naturally I'll be defensive. It seems like you're done though, so I'll move on.
I just unlocked the Beastmaster. I like how jobs, up to a certain point, are unlocked through Quests. It's a bonus I enjoy quite a bit. And Rotor, the law crap is annoying, but the rewards are usually pretty nifty. You don't have to go too far out of your way to complete battles without breaking any laws (though "No Ranged Attacks" fucked my shit up). I was speaking idiomatically. |
The lack of CPU adherence to the law is the trade-off you take for Clan Abilities and good spoils at the end of each battle (oftentimes in the shape of weapons and armor).
How ya doing, buddy? |
The crappiest law I've seen is No Missing, but it was a part of the Clan Trial. It would've been pathetically easy had it not been for that kind of law.
FELIPE NO |
Finally, finally, I got a Seeq. For some reason, none of them wanted to appear.
Even now, with only Silence Gas and no Reverse Item, the Ranger is a broken job. All you have to do is set a trap right in front of you, turn your back to the enemy, and watch them waste a turn. It's just mean, and it's only going to get meaner when I get the Stun Needle and Charm traps-- not to mention Reverse Item + Item Lore (just one Hi Potion will do an easy 200 damage to an enemy). What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Yes,
Spoiler:
Am I the only one who likes the Bazaar? I get new loot all the time, so I get excited and check out the list. Look for a decent item description and the highest ranks I can make, then get started. Very enjoyable to me, even though Black and White Mage gear barely shows up. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
A couple things might show up after certain plot points, but the vast majority of the shop's inventory comes from the Bazaar.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
The game has its flaws, but the ones you listed aren't the ones I'd be worried about.
1) We were talking about Optimize earlier. Because of the skill mastery system, the optimize feature is kind of distracting. I do miss it in very specific cases, though. 2) If you don't know which races are which, it takes a very simple and quick flip through the booklet to the game. For newcomers, I believe this is why laws regarding races aren't used until you're well on your way through the game. 3) The New Abilities Learned thing is just a notice to open your Unit Info menu. Once you open it, characters who have mastered new skills will be jumping up and down instead of just standing there (and they will continue to jump until you scroll down the equipment list and actually see what was learned). Very little room to not notice who learned what.
But now that you mention it, yeah, Knives have been an absolute nightmare to find. Been stuck with a Scramasax and that one knife Adelle joins with. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Exactly my point. They get rid of in-game tutorials and still someone complains. I'll take the option of looking at the manual over mandatory in-game tutorials any day.
Level 25 now, just beat the Red King. Sequencer is a mean knightsword, and the description seems to indicate there's even more to it. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
FELIPE NO |
Just beat Blue King Bliu a little while ago at level 34. Surprisingly... not that difficult. He has an annoying spell that hits with earth magic(k) then follows up with a couple of physical hits against anyone in range, but he can't use it often. I think he ends up being a bit easier because of your larger mastery of advanced jobs, so go in there and pummel him with a Fighter and Templar. I haven't tried fighting Green King yet.
Also, everyone, be sure to Loot him. I used Loot Level 3 (with my new Bandit's Gloves or whatever they're called to slightly increase steal rates) and nabbed Godwood, which is probably the last item all of you need to make a Malbow. It's a Rank A weapon, so I think it's sort of an early shot at nabbing a really nice bow. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Just fought Ewan and stole his Ninja Tabi after like ten tries. By the looks of it though (Move +2), it's worth it! Jam it back in, in the dark. |
