I played it for a few months and then quit when finals season started to loom. I was a female Elvaan and I believe a... 39 Paladin/19 Warrior. Puppetmaster/Blue Mage was my backup. I'll probably pick it back up when the Wings of the Goddess expansion comes out.
Go to Titan Server! Jam it back in, in the dark.

Vana'diel Collection 2007. That's what got me started, but I happened to like the game a lot. I plan to get back into it soon enough.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Yup, unless you know people on another server. Titan, I'm pretty sure, has the highest density of Puppetmasters. This matters because it and Corsair have an abysmally low amount of dedicated users, and it's good if you can find them in larger numbers in the event that you attempt to use those jobs. All other jobs are represented well.
As a Paladin I can help you out by powerleveling you in the lower-level areas (39 isn't good enough once you get into Qufim or Kazham), and as a Puppetmaster I can teach you the tricks of the trade (Automaton attachments are complex at first). This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Uh... He couldn't take Puppetmaster as his first job even if he wanted to, simple because it's an advanced job. He has to have one job at level 30 and then complete a quest.
And it's of my own personal opinion that Puppetmaster is hugely underrated. Here's what I've said about its shortcomings and it being underrated in the past:
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Do WHM or RDM. Desireable at any level (RDM for Refresh later on, but also good as back-up healers before then).
As for Humes and Bastok... bleh. I'm a female Elvaan in San d'Oria and I really liked it. How ya doing, buddy? |
If you switch to WAR, don't sub THF. Just not worth it unless you're using it to farm (after leveling THF main for a while), and you'll never get invites beyond Valkurm. Also, if you do go with RDM, save yourself the grief others will give and don't nuke unless you're killing time or trying to skill up on your own. Then again, you're talking to a guy who used /WAR when using RDM.
Sounds like you want a job that can sort of do it all. Have you thought about BLU, then? It can do physical and magic damage, it can heal itself (and others to a very, very limited degree), and almost every spell comes with various status effects tacked on. It's a really fun job, but requires a ton of patience. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I have to disagree with Xardion and say I prefer /WHM. /BLM is probably slightly more useful, but both are preferred over other subs and you won't lose out on invites regardless of which you choose.
FELIPE NO |
I think it's Beastmaster, not Beastman. Beastmen is a family of monsters in the game (Orcs, Quadav, Yagudo, Goblins).
I played with a BST back when I was still around, and trust me, don't underestimate the job or the jugs. Jugs allow you call on monsters in areas where charming isn't possible or convenient (such as areas with only Beastmen or a high-level area where charming won't work or only for a few seconds). BSTs are the masters of soloing for a good reason. Also, I went to Al Zahbi as soon as I reached level 30. With help, you can easily do a naked run to get BLU and the rest of the jobs. COR can be a real pain if your help can't take on the mobs, though. Still, I got all three in the end. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Warrior is a generic melee job. Good with almost every weapon, best with Axes and Great Axes. Depending on what job you're going to become, pick a weapon that'll help in the long run. For example, going with an axe and shield is good if you want to go into PLD or RDM or something, since you'll get Shield mastery. If you want to be a DRK or something, you can probably get away with using a Great Sword until you reach 30 (which is all you'll need to get to, anyway). Anything beyond those three weapons is not that good and will probably deter people forming parties. And trust me, you don't want to wait any longer than you will as a WAR. Back in the day, I had to wait an hour or two for any invites in Yuhtunga. Can get boring and repetitive.
Monk is a pure damage dealer, unlike WAR which generally functions as a tank or backup tank. Update your weapon often, and don't ever pull hate. High HP only gets you so far. Thief is... Thief. Most people level it for farming (killing for item drops) since it has a skill that increases drop rates, but it can be deadly in its own right with Viper Bite. Takes a while to get there though, so probably not a good starting class. White Mage is something you already know about. You'll never want of invites ever because of how crucial it is for parties, but you have to be able to do your job well. Also hard to level to 10, which is when you'll first begin to get into parties. Requires a mastery of macros, so not for beginners. Black Mage is the nuker. Godly damage dealer, but sort of meh in the beginning. Still, it's a heavy hitter that can draw hate from the tank if they're not careful. Takes some getting used to, so probably not the best job to start with. BLMs have been a rarity lately. Red Mage is my favorite starting job. It fights, it cures and it nukes, but isn't great at any of them. Some people get it to function as a melee job with RDM/WAR, but it's not common or recommended. You'll be a backup or even main healer in the beginning, but later on your main job is to buff, debuff and Refresh. Fun, but you need to be able to adapt to what your party needs you to do. Jam it back in, in the dark.

It's all there. Definitely turn shadows off and all that.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
There are multiple option menus. Check them all, it has to be in there.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
