I spoke with our Nintendo retail representative on Tuesday when she swung by our store, and here's how much Nintendo loves their employees.

Me: "So how come Twilight Princess has now been pushed back all the way to September?"

Nintendo Rep Lady: "What?!"

Me: "Yeah, our release date is 09/02/2006. It's been circulating around the Internet as well."

Nintendo Rep Lady: "I can't believe it got pushed back again! I didn't even know."

I was actually a bit stunned to learn that Nintendo didn't even tell their own retail reps about this. If for no other reason, they should've been at least given some warning. "You might be bombarded with this particular question."

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Oddly enough, that's how it was at my store as well. The Sony rep (who, by the way, was extremely attractive. Sex sells!) always knew her stuff and could answer most of our questions diligently. We never see the Xbox rep, although coincidentally the Sony rep left Sony and went to Microsoft, and we haven't seen her since.

The Nintendo rep comes by pretty frequently, but her lack of knowledge, especially about something as grandiose as Twilight Princess, was startling.

How ya doing, buddy?

I tried to cross my eyes and make whatever "look closely" thing they're talking about appear (like those strange 3D puzzles) but it didn't work. I wonder what they're talking about?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

That's fan-fucking-tastic. They delayed the game so they could make it compatible with a system that's not even out yet. What a poor business decision. They should've released the game back in November (or at the latest February) and then re-released it as a Player's Choice with the Revo compatibility included.

Twilight Princess will be the last GC title to draw any significant profit for the 'Cube, and yeah I think it's a bad decision to push it back for a full year after its original date.

So let's assume that TP actually came out this past September. Fast-forward to, let's say, a month after the Revo's launch. Don't you think Nintendo would have TP available to download from their online service by then?

At the very least, they could probably just make a patch or something to make it compatible. I still stand by my comment though that pushing Twilight Princess back an entire was bad enough, but doing so because Nintendo's making it controller-compatible with an unavailable system is retarded.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Through all my ranting, that's exactly the point I wanted to make. If it's being developed for the Gamecube, pushed for the Gamecube and sold on the Gamecube, why take this highly anticipated game away from fans for an entire year to, among other minor things, add controller compatibility for a system that's not even available yet?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

In which case I'd like to ask another question -- has it really taken an entire year for minor gameplay tweaks? I remember Nintendo making the initial delay from September to November in order to create an orchestrated soundtrack or something to that effect.

If they're going to delay such a major title, I would think that all of their fans would deserve a reason as to why on the day the delay is announced, ya know? We've been speculating this for what seems like ages and I think it's a bit unfair and selfish of Nintendo to keep this information and other info from gamers as far as delays are concerned.

Info from E3 and the Wii-capable Zelda.

Quote:

More importantly for Nintendo fans, the Time article revealed several key pieces of information about Wii games. First, Grossman described playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Wii. "Now I'm Errol Flynn, sword fighting with the controller, then aiming a bow and arrow, then using it as a fishing rod, reeling in a stubborn virtual fish," he said. While Nintendo confirmed the much-anticipated GameCube title would have some Wii functionality, this is the first official description of what that functionality is.
Taken From GameSpot. Seems cool enough.

I was watching G4's E3 coverage early this morning and they happened to show a preview of the Wii-version of Twilight Princess. Unfortunately, it wasn't displayed ona widescreen-capable monitor.

Link was like, 6 feet tall and lanky. Bleh.

Whew, another Nintendo zealot. Yikes. And starting a civil war too? Yikes.

It's true that a lot of people deem Ocarina of Time to be one of the best Zelda games in history, however a lot of people disagree too -- just go find a copy of this month's Game Informer and flip to page 38, the "Sacred Cow" article. I know plenty of people who think that both Majora's Mask and Link to the Past, hell even the original, are all better than Ocarina of Time.

Yeah, that probably is one particular character, but it'd be cool to see them all with some type of armor on. Regardless of that though, it will still be really cool to see the other races in Twilight Princess. The Zora have always been a personal favorite, espcially in Major's Mask since you could, you know, be one.

Well, I think a reawakening is called for. I think, among all the Wii news, everyone knows that the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has once again been delayed until December 11. Nintendo's fallen back on their promise to release the last good Gamecube game until after the Wii's already been released and established.

So, I know some of you Nintendo fans are really hardcore and everything, but doesn't piss you off? I mean, I know there are people with Zelda:TP pre-ordered and have had it as such for two years running now.

I've been pissed off more than enough at Nintendo's antics regarding the GC version of this game -- it should've been released a loooong time ago. However, it hasn't. At this point, whether it's a one-day delay, three-week delay, or full-blown cancellation (which is probably coming next, wouldn'tcha know), this is just kinda...wrong at this point.

Of course, I know a lot of Nintendo fans aren't really affected by this, since the Wii version would be the one to get anyway, but there are a lot of people who still have their Gamecubes and want Twilight Princess for that system. I dunno, this is just kinda unsettling that Nintendo would even dare announce another delay.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Whoa there Acer -- that's more hatred than I've ever seen you fume before.

I preorder games I really want far, far ahead of their release date, and in some instances before a true release is ever given. I don't have any particular reason for doing it other than I don't have to worry about getting my copy or my spot in line, as it would be with something like TP.

For major releases, it really is a bad idea to wait one week in advance. More than once I've seen Gamestop/EB Games stop taking reservations as far as two weeks before a game's release, as supply can no longer meet demand for that particular store.

You have a bad experience with this sorta thing or something?

"It's the principle of the matter" applies to this situation, Mikey. The fact is that GC owners have waited long enough for a game that was finished well over a year ago. To see it delayed one more time for absolutely no reason whatsoever is really, to a certain extent, sheer abuse of fan loyalty.

Another odd thing about this is that it doesn't fit Nintendo's usual business practice. I'm not the most well-versed Nintendo historian, but this has got to be one of, if not the only, title that's been so highly anticipated and hyped up and delayed for seemingly no real reason.

As far as I know, Nintendo's never really been one to hold back a game from the fan's for very long, but surely they know that Twilight Princess should've been in gamers' hands over a year ago. Any intelligent gamer knows this, so obviously Nintendo must. If they didn't, they wouldn't have put it on the Wii, presumably. At this point, any other delay is utterly absurd on their part, and in my opinion all of the delays have been utterly absurd, save for the very, very first one.

Edit: I have to disagree, Acer. I've never heard of a developer saying "We promise this game will be out on this exact date." However, I've heard every developer/publisher say "This game will be in stores in November." This we can agree on, right? No one just outright promises a game will be out on such a specific date, period end of story. However, Nintendo did say numerous times that "...the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be in stores in November." A year ago, EB Games had an exact release date for the game as well.

Not only that, but Nintendo actually DID make a promise, now that I think about it, regarding TP's release on the GameCube. At E3 '06 they promised up and down, reassuring sooooo many fans that both versions of Twilight Princess would launch simultaneously with the Wii. As of this morning they went back and retracted that promise once again.

Now, I agree with you that people who pre-order a game months in advance, including myself, have no right to compain, especially when the said pre-ordered game doesn't have a confirmed release date. Twilight Princess, however, has had at least three confirmed dates, and now has a fourth one. Therefore, I think people who pre-ordered it a long time ago, including those who pre-ordered months before the rumored initial release date and those who waited until a week or two before to pre-order it, have a right to express a bit of disdain toward this.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I think a better strategy would have been to release the game for Gamecube somewhere around a year ago, and then include the new dungeons, redesigned character models, and Wii functionality in the Wii version.

Ultimately, I think this is a huge disservice to the fans, not only Zelda fans, but Nintendo loyalties. And piling one more delay on top of the others ones (whose reasons were vague, if present at all save for Wii functionality) is just a cliche` smack in the face.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm eagerly anticipating this title as much as anyone else is, which is in part why I started this discussion. But at this point, the hype has worn off from me, and I'll probably wait until I can get the Gamecube version as a Player's Choice for $20 or just get it used and save the money.

Nintendo made me wait this long, so they can wait just as long for my money. [/jaded]

No I didn't forget. However, look at the key difference there. One is a cross-manufacturer port, the other is a cross-system port. In truth, I think the only people who would cry foul are those that would buy the Wii version anyway, because they were already planning on getting the Wii.

So really, no I don't think there would've been too much foul-crying. Actually, I bet a lot of fans would've been pleased to have a familiar game ported to their new console featuring new control schemes and all sorts of graphical updates.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

That's not a bad idea, actually. Although again, I sorta feel obligated to go back to my earlier argument and say that if were gonna do that, then why not release the GC version earlier, and then include it with the Wii version at Wii launch.

I mean, it's sorta the same thing with the Collector's Edition disc and Ocarine of Time: Master Quest.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
