It depends entirely on what's being read. When I read fiction, I do visualize all that I'm able to based on the descriptions of what I'm reading.
If I'm reading something for class though, I tend to repeat what I just read to myself while I continue reading. I'll read the next actively (sometimes outloud) while passively reviewing the previous sentence. Jam it back in, in the dark.
